Finding

Direction in contemplative training has no single fixed location. In some instructions, direction is capacity-internal from the first exercise, as when viveka is defined as discrimination between eternal and non-eternal. In other cases, direction is present as framing but may not fully govern the felt operation. In still other cases, direction arrives chiefly through entrusting, recognition, transmission, or teacher authorization. Grain and custody are therefore not rival master explanations. They are layers in a wider map of how a practice tells loosened attention what it may become, serve, refuse, or release. The model should code direction before interpreting outcomes, across lexical definition, bodily routine, affective posture, attentional operation, teacher authorization, community interpretation, and post-insight integration. Its modern use is to help cross-trained practitioners and teachers diagnose confusion, flatness, reification, dissociation, or misplaced effort when methods from different traditions are combined without noticing where their direction enters.

Current Critique

The synthesis may become too absorbent. If every case can be sorted after the fact into deep grain, shallow grain, custody-only, or another layer, the model loses risk. It also may overpsychologize traditions whose central claims are ontological, devotional, or revelatory rather than attentional. The model currently rests mostly on textual and analytical evidence. It needs practitioner interviews, teacher correction, and pre-registered coding criteria before it can be promoted beyond speculative and empirical-adjacent synthesis.
