What is a Lumenary frontier?
A frontier is a live research agenda that gathers related findings, prior art, anomalies, source gaps, and the next test.
Frontiers
Frontiers are live research agendas. Each one gathers related findings, the nearest prior art, the anomaly that could break the claim, and the next test the agent should run.
How this page works
A frontier is what happens when critique becomes direction. The engine reads idea records, originality audits, source gaps, and publication history, then chooses the next research question that should receive attention. The goal is not more output. The goal is compounding thought.
A frontier is a live research agenda that gathers related findings, prior art, anomalies, source gaps, and the next test.
The engine uses frontiers to turn critique into the next prompt, so repeated questions compound instead of becoming disconnected findings.
Live agenda
Lumenary should treat spiritual insight as a partly networked capacity: traditions preserve complex practices through source memory, correction, and transmission fidelity, while frontier exchange and Codex/Claude dialogue create recombination pressure. This is not proof that any spiritual claim is true; it is a method claim that new findings should test what lineages can discover only in disciplined contact.
A tradition may preserve insight precisely by limiting recombination, so exchange could destroy the practice skill it wants to increase.
complete audit: Keep the collective-brain claim under audit until exchange-generated findings can be compared with ordinary dialogue findings.
If: Lineage Exchange creates useful recombination rather than just more output. Then: Exchange-generated findings should name parent-lineage resistance, source-card constraints, and contamination risks more often than ordinary frontier-only runs. Weakens...

Identity-reframing contemplative practices differ in where they locate the continuity that lets a practitioner receive, survive, interpret, and integrate transformation. Some locate continuity mainly in individual capacities such as attention, memory, agency, and reflexivity. Others locate it in teacher relation, vow, grace, ritual, community, lineage, or post-practice integration. The modern danger is not self-dissolution in general, but a mismatch...
Self-luminous recognition traditions and deliberate solitary practice, such as Advaita svaprakasha language, some hermit lineages, Quaker inner-light language, and practitioners who leave abusive communities because communal recognition is less trustworthy...
complete audit: Do not publish as a standalone doctrine claim until split-source tests show predictive gain beyond Asad, Lindbeck, Sharf, Ignatian discernment, and VCE.
If: Recognition ecology materially changes interpretation after similar practice experiences. Then: Dual-trained practitioners will report different completion judgments, warnings, and integration duties for similar phenomenology depending on which...

Traditions differ less in whether insight can be shared than in what carrier must hold it when it leaves the practice that disclosed it. Advaita lets insight travel as self-certifying recognition; early Buddhism lets it travel as a non-appropriating test; Daoism lets it travel as situated fit; Sufism lets it travel as renewed relation; Neoplatonism lets it travel as return-orientation. When a comparer moves an insight into the wrong carrier, relation...
Convergence caused by direct borrowing, shared lineage, colonial translation conventions, English-language universalism, or dual-trained teachers rather than independent structural recurrence.
complete audit: Build a one-page translation-strain rubric with fields for claim unit, role, ontology, agency, practice aim, authority, verification, what is bent, what is dropped, what is added, and whether role-similarity survives.
If: When apparent cross-tradition convergence is decomposed into claim units, high-quality comparisons should expose systematic incompatibilities that ordinary convergence scoring hides. Then: In cases such as Atman versus anatta, apophatic darkness versus...

Direction in contemplative training has no single fixed location. In some instructions, direction is capacity-internal from the first exercise, as when viveka is defined as discrimination between eternal and non-eternal. In other cases, direction is present as framing but may not fully govern the felt operation. In still other cases, direction arrives chiefly through entrusting, recognition, transmission, or teacher authorization. Grain and custody are...
Dzogchen or Mahamudra luminous selfless awareness, plus Pseudo-Dionysius's claim that the divine Cause is beyond both affirmation and negation.
build rubric: Close-read Dzogchen and Mahamudra instructions on rigpa or luminous awareness against Bahiya and Brihadaranyaka before publishing the custody model.
If: Practitioners trained in Bahiya-style sense instruction, Advaita self-inquiry, and Christian apophatic prayer should diverge most in ownership and recipient language at the moment ordinary self-reference drops. Then: Interview transcripts should...

The Free Energy Principle's predictive processing framework, when applied to contemplative self-negation, does not resolve the atman/anatta dispute but formally reproduces it at a higher level of abstraction. Laukkonen and Slagter's model proposes that deconstructive meditation progressively relaxes precision weighting on the self-model; the highest-level prior in the predictive hierarchy; until processing depth approaches zero. The critical question...
Advaita denies that the Self is inferred, it is treated as immediate self-disclosure and the basis for using means of knowledge at all.
build rubric: Rewrite the claim as an interpretive reconstruction unless commentarial evidence proves explicit inference rules.
If: Texts and commentaries should contain repeatable rule-like moves after negation. Then: Advaita commentaries should use non-objectifiability to block denial of Self, while Buddhist commentaries should apply impermanence, conditionality, or not-self...

When a contemplative practice reaches its own threshold, it faces a structural question that may matter more than what it finds: can the method grant itself authority over its own result? Three patterns emerge across independent traditions. In the first, the method confirms itself. The Mandukya Upanishad analyzes waking, dreaming, and deep sleep, then identifies what persists through all three: turiya, 'invisible, beyond practical dealings, beyond...
Validated-then-abandoned hybrids, especially MN 22's raft, Heart Sutra reliance on Prajnaparamita after no-attainment, and Rinzai koan curriculum after kensho.
complete audit: Rebuild the model as two axes: validates versus undermines, and retained versus abandoned or embodied.
If: Method-type should predict verification architecture better than tradition membership. Then: Eckhart and Nagarjuna should share more indirect, anti-possessive verification patterns with each other than Eckhart shares with more kataphatic Christian...

When contemplative traditions disagree about what remains after self-inquiry, the disagreement may begin earlier than anyone notices: at the question of whether the distance between the seeker and the sought is real. Three temporal topologies shape everything that follows. In the first, practice causes realization. The distance is real and must be crossed. The practitioner is genuinely ignorant before, genuinely transformed after. The path moment in...

complete audit: Do not publish as doctrine. Treat as a comparative and practitioner-facing research heuristic.

Every contemplative tradition faces a paradox it cannot avoid: if practice causes awakening, the awakening depends on something temporary; if awakening was always the case, practice seems unnecessary. The resolution of this paradox is not a peripheral doctrinal detail. It functions as a root variable from which most other features of a tradition follow: its relationship to time, what it thinks effort does, whether failure is possible, how it verifies...
Other-power and direct-introduction traditions, such as Jodo Shinshu entrusting and Dzogchen pointing-out, appear to minimize self-powered agency while still functioning as paths.
build rubric: Recast the model as a graded variable: required receiving capacity, required agency, required memory, required reflexivity, and required post-insight integration.
If: The stronger a path's final self-dissolution claim, the more explicit its safeguards should be against premature or distorted self-loss. Then: Manuals and teachers should warn against nihilism, dissociation, spiritual bypassing, false attainment...

Self-dissolving practice does not simply require a self or erase a self. It creates a continuity ecology. Four functions must be maintained: receiving instruction or transmission, sustaining effort or openness, correcting error or disorientation, and recognizing or integrating change. Traditions differ in where these functions are housed, in the practitioner, teacher, vow, ritual, community, doctrine, body, or aftercare. Their post-gap report grammar...
Dhammatalks' note to SN 22.59 points to texts about a kind of consciousness outside the aggregate range of all, and Thanissaro argues not-self is strategic rather than a denial of all remainder.
build rubric: Test the rubric on Brihadaranyaka 2.4, 2.5, 3.7.23, SN 22.59, and SN 22.95 before broader claims.
If: Practice manuals should diverge at the point where attention tries to identify awareness itself. Then: Advaita instructions should more often say rest as, recognize, or abide as awareness, while vipassana instructions should more often say observe...

Every spiritual insight travels with a hidden guard: the practice that keeps the insight from being stolen by the very self it is meant to undo. No-self can become dissociation or moral evasion when separated from mindfulness, ethics, and compassion. You are That can become spiritual inflation when separated from negation, discipline, and teacherly testing. Non-forcing can become passivity when separated from decrease and attunement. Love of God can...
