Carrier First, pattern Second
Release matters only if ordinary life becomes more honest, careful, and whole.
At a glance
Letting go is not the same as disappearing. Memory, care, duty, and relationship still have to remain. The risk is turning freedom into drift or pride. A path should loosen identity without breaking responsibility.
- Release should not erase responsibility.
- The return to ordinary life is the test.
- Freedom becomes suspect when care weakens.
Originality audit
The audit found close neighbors, but the remaining claim still seems worth keeping and testing.
Closest Prior Art
- Lindahl et al., The Varieties of practice Experience, PLOS ONE, 2017, Overlap: Very close. Difference: This candidate adds a stricter sequence: support and wound first, pattern validation second, shape causality last.
- Cheetah House practitioner support materials, and Overlap: Close practitioner near-neighbor. Difference: The candidate proposes a formal report-pattern code before causal shape claims.
- Pons, Galante, Van Dam et al., A cross-sectional survey on depersonalization/derealization and meditation-induced alterations of the self, Scientific Reports, 2026, Overlap: Strong empirical neighbor. Difference: The candidate focuses on high-status self-proof tasks and structural-remainder pattern rather than DPDR questionnaires.
What Could Break It
Anomaly: Teacher-held huatou or Rinzai great doubt may intentionally intensify self-referential pressure inside a strong support, while stable solitary practitioners may report structural remainder without harm.
Test: If the model is right, Weak support, loneliness, contingent self-worth, shame, intolerance of uncertainty, poor sleep, and lack of ordinary repair predict distress and impairment better than operator-exempting versus self-closing prompt type. It weakens if Prompt shape predicts distress, intrusive return, or impairment after support, wound, sleep, practice intensity, baseline rumination, and clinical risk are controlled.
Practitioner Test
- In concrete failure cases, did harm track weak support and the wound it addresses more than the technical form of the inquiry?
- Can you name cases where the same inquiry was safe in one support and harmful when privatized?
- Do students report a distinct structural remainder that is not shame, self-evaluation, doctrinal recitation, DPDR, or ordinary uncertainty?
Cross-Domain Test
In psychedelic or elite-coaching contexts, preparation, support, integration, and contingent self-worth will predict distress and identity overclaim better than the symbolic content of the experience or exercise.

Common Questions
What is the main idea of Carrier First, pattern Second?
Letting go is not the same as disappearing. Memory, care, duty, and relationship still have to remain. The risk is turning freedom into drift or pride. A path should loosen identity without breaking responsibility.
Is this a public claim?
No. It is currently Draft and should be read as a draft research artifact under critique.
How does The Lumenary evaluate this idea?
The Lumenary evaluates this idea with scores, critique, promotion rules, and an originality audit that currently marks it as Extended prior work with 0.77 confidence.
Research notes
Original research claim
When a high-status spiritual task is removed from its carrier and used as private self-proof, weak carrier ecology and receiver wound should be treated as the primary causes of intensity, harm, and most self-referential distress. Operator-exempting topology is not yet a cause of self-location. It survives only as a narrower hypothesis: it may shape one report grammar, structural residue, if that grammar can be coded reliably apart from evaluative deficit and remains above nonspiritual self-evaluation baselines after repair-shift and wound controls. The first practical response is carrier repair, ordinary-life verification, social holding, stop rules, and care routing, not finer inner analysis.
Why it may be new
Neither source idea contained the full two-stage synthesis. The proponent had a carrier versus topology dissociation, but used self-location too broadly. The challenger had a repair-survival and receiver-wound gate, but did not preserve a narrow topology hypothesis as a measurable grammar modifier. The new candidate is the ordered rule: validate the phenomenological grammar first, then test causal topology only if the measurement survives.
Critique
The candidate could still be a refined vocabulary effect. Structural residue may be contemplative language placed over ordinary self-concern, shame, intolerance of uncertainty, or learned witness concepts. It may over-serve stable, verbal, reflective practitioners and under-serve people whose suffering is grief, loneliness, depression, addiction, compulsion, material strain, or acute derealization. It also risks psychologizing traditions whose speech functions as vow, entrustment, participation, worship, or liberation rather than repair. Originality is not established until prior-art and method audits are completed.

Next Directions
- Pre-register a pattern code for evaluative deficit, structural remainder, diffuse performative anxiety, and none, then validate it on mixed nonspiritual, spiritual, and neutral ambiguity reports with coders blind to condition and hypothesis.
- Require acceptable inter-rater reliability before running the causal study. If reliability fails, retire the shape factor or treat it as report-language only.
- Run the revised design: subject-exempting versus self-closing prompts, teacher-held versus decontextualized solo support, plus a nonspiritual ambiguous self-evaluation baseline.
- Measure loneliness, contingent self-worth, shame, rumination, intolerance of uncertainty, social support, repair-task change, intrusive return, ordinary action, and help-seeking over one week.
- Test the practice implication against ordinary journaling, source checking, trusted conversation, and action planning. The candidate weakens if the repair check increases isolation, rumination, or self-monitoring.
- Complete an originality audit against homeomorphic equivalence, comparative-method redescription, spiritual-bypass screening, practice safety literature, and felt interview methods.
