Original research claim
Identity-reframing contemplative practices differ in where they locate the continuity that lets a practitioner receive, survive, interpret, and integrate transformation. Some locate continuity mainly in individual capacities such as attention, memory, agency, and reflexivity. Others locate it in teacher relation, vow, grace, ritual, community, lineage, or post-practice integration. The modern danger is not self-dissolution in general, but a mismatch between the continuity a practice assumes and the continuity actually available to the practitioner and surrounding field.
Why it may be new
The synthesis is not merely the proponent's minimum-self thesis or the challenger's translation-strain method. It uses translation strain to replace self as the master term, then creates a practice-safety diagnostic: locate the continuity carrier, identify missing supports, predict characteristic failures, and compare those predictions against rival risk models. Critique
The synthesis may still be too elastic. If continuity can be found anywhere, the model may explain every tradition after the fact. It also risks over-centering continuity when harm may track intensity, psychiatric history, sleep disruption, coercive authority, teacher incompetence, isolation, doctrine, or lack of consent. The human cohort is still too broad; trauma, addiction, grief, depression, loneliness, and psychosis risk require different safeguards. Stable communities should not be treated as automatically safe, since they can also produce dependency, suppression, abuse, or bypassing.
