More is not always better

A practice may strengthen one capacity while weakening another, so direction matters.

Turned Growth

At a glance

Growth moves in more than one direction. A practice may strengthen attention while weakening pride, increase trust while reducing control, or build discipline while softening identity. The record must track direction, not just amount. More is not always better.

  • A spiritual path does not merely require more or less capacity from a practitioner.
  • It requires capacities with direction.
  • Neither source idea alone fully held this combined structure.

Human need

What this could help with

Achievement pressure, perfectionism, burnout, and the habit of treating performance as proof of personal worth.

Who this may be for

People whose sense of worth rises and falls with usefulness, praise, failure, correction, visible output, or being seen as capable.

Where it may not fit

Not the primary lens for people whose main struggle is crisis, addiction withdrawal, severe depression, under-motivation, or work already done with ease and love.

Why it matters

It can separate real responsibility from the extra burden of turning every act into a verdict on the self.

What to test

A practice derived from this idea should test whether effort stays careful when identity is no longer on trial.

Originality audit

Status Novel synthesis
Confidence 0.74
Novelty score 0.61

The audit treats this as a new joining of known pieces, not a claim that no one has seen any part of it before.

Closest Prior Art

  • Pargament et al., Religion and the Problem-Solving Process: Three Styles of Coping, Overlap: Very close for place and direction. Difference: Pargament studies coping and divine-human problem solving, not a between traditions record of receiving, agency, memory, reflexivity, and integration across soteriologies.
  • Jack Engler, Therapeutic Aims in Psychotherapy and Meditation, and Inquiring Mind interview, Overlap: Very close for prerequisite capacities, sequencing, and failure modes. Difference: Engler is mainly psychodynamic and another path practice-facing.
  • Dahl, Lutz, and Davidson, Reconstructing and Deconstructing the Self, and Investigating the felt Matrix, Overlap: Close. Difference: The candidate adds receiving, agency, memory, support place, safeguards, soteriological direction, and inter-tradition transfer costs.

What Could Break It

Anomaly: Dogen's Bendowa practice-realization, especially the claim that training and enlightenment are not two,

Test: If the model is right, Independent coders should infer later manual warnings and safeguards from early claims about self, liberation, and final transformation at above-chance rates. It weakens if Scalar maturity, broad tradition labels, or Pargament-style agency place predict the same warnings as well as the vector record, or coders cannot agree on direction and place.

Practitioner Test

  • Are receiving, agency, memory, reflexivity, and integration separable teaching loads in your tradition, or does that list impose an outside psychology?
  • Does directionality predict actual sequencing, warnings, and repair instructions for students, or is it obvious under older terms such as upaya, grace, self-power, Other Power, or ego development?
  • When practitioners move between effort, surrender, vow, recognition, and practice-realization paths, do they need a reorientation practice, or only more maturity and guidance?

Cross-Domain Test

Students or clients with equal baseline ability should show different dropout, alliance rupture, transfer, and relapse patterns depending on whether the method requires self-direction, surrender to process, external scaffolding, memory of rules, reflexive monitoring, or post-session integration.

Common Questions

What is the main idea of More is not always better?

Growth moves in more than one direction. A practice may strengthen attention while weakening pride, increase trust while reducing control, or build discipline while softening identity. The record must track direction, not just amount. More is not always better.

Is this a public claim?

Yes. It is promoted as Public Claim, while still carrying critique and source notes.

How does The Lumenary evaluate this idea?

The Lumenary evaluates this idea with scores, critique, promotion rules, and an originality audit that currently marks it as Novel synthesis with 0.74 confidence.

Research notes

Original research claim

A spiritual path does not merely require more or less capacity from a practitioner. It requires capacities with direction. Receiving, agency, memory, reflexivity, and integration recur across traditions as functional roles, but each role must be described as a vector with magnitude, direction, locus, stage, safeguards, and failure mode. A path can lower or relocate a load only through a directionally compatible capacity, or through an explicit reorientation practice that changes the grain of attention, trust, memory, agency, or integration. The next explanatory layer is soteriological: the direction of each capacity may be generated by the tradition's account of what the self is, what liberation is, and what remains after transformation.

Why it may be new

Neither source idea alone fully held this combined structure. The proponent supplied the five-role ledger and conservation insight. The challenger supplied directional grain and cross-tradition resistance. The dialogue produced a revised synthesis that treats each capacity as vector-valued while also adding a new caution: direction may be derivative of whole-path soteriology rather than an independent cell-level property. That makes the candidate more precise and more testable than either scalar capacity scoring or a general grain thesis.

Critique

The synthesis may become too elaborate to compress the phenomena it studies. If every tradition requires bespoke direction, stage, safeguard, and failure language, the ledger may become a catalog rather than a model. The conservation rule is also weakened unless reorientation cost can be operationalized. Pure Land and Dzogchen remain pressure cases because entrusting and recognition may be relational, event-like, or field-dependent rather than practitioner-owned capacities. The model should not claim originality or promotion until an originality audit tests its proximity to constructivist mysticism, contemplative-development theory, Buddhist attention studies, and comparative soteriology.

Next Directions

  • Build a vector record checklist where each cell records capacity, magnitude, direction, place, stage, safeguard, failure mode, and evidence.
  • Operationalize reorientation cost using practitioner reports, teacher instructions, switching difficulty, relapse into prior attentional habits, and needed bridging practices.
  • Test whether direction is cell-level or soteriology-level by comparing traditions with similar liberation accounts but different practice architectures.
  • Audit close prior art in Katz, Ferrer, Sharf, Engler, Ganeri, Siderits and Katsura, practice adverse-effects research, and comparative theology of grace and effort.
  • Code adverse-practice reports for texture mismatch versus missing prerequisite to see whether direction predicts the kind of failure better than magnitude alone.
