Practice / retired / low risk

When a teaching moves you, name the slow work it asks before you gather the next one.

To test whether a spiritual idea is being collected as content or allowed to form the person who holds it.

Before you begin

Duration 8 minutes
Frequency Only when a teaching strongly attracts you or you are about to save, share, or adopt it; no more than three times per week.
Minimum attempt Try it on three different teachings across two weeks, then review whether it changed conduct or only changed your collection.

Human problem

What this is for

Meaning loss, digital comparison, and loneliness from accumulating and recombining teachings without formation or correction.

Modern human condition sources

For

Who may need it

Stable adults and older teens who read, save, remix, or post spiritual teachings across traditions, mostly alone or online.

Not for

When this may not fit

Not for acute crisis, suicidal thoughts, psychosis, mania, severe depression, dissociation, addiction withdrawal, fresh grief needing care, OCD or scrupulosity loops, unsafe authority, or coercive groups. Not needed for people already practicing steadily under competent guidance. It is not a substitute for community, therapy, or clinical care.

Steps

  1. Write the teaching in one plain sentence.
  2. Ask: is this asking me to know something, or to become someone different?
  3. Name one slow formative thing it would require: a repeated practice, a hard conversation, a repair, a duty, a change of habit, or contact with a person who could correct you.
  4. Choose one such formative act for the next week, and do its smallest version today.
  5. Do not save, post, or gather another teaching on the same theme until you have taken that act.

Notice

What to watch

  • Whether the teaching leads to one concrete formative act or only to more collecting.
  • Whether you feel pulled to display or remix the teaching before living any of it.
  • Whether a real person, duty, or practice enters, or whether it stays private and abstract.
  • Whether the check itself becomes another thing to perform or grade.

Caution

When to stop

Stop if this increases shame, compulsive self-monitoring, isolation, or contempt for ordinary help. Forming a person is not a solo achievement; seek community and care where needed.

Weakens if

What would count against it

It weakens if ordinary journaling or one trusted conversation works as well, if it increases rumination or self-grading, or if it simply slows collecting without producing any change in conduct, contact, or care.

  • Mode chosen: Critique. The run pressures and narrows the frontier 'The collective brain of awakening' rather than extending the analogy.
  • Lineage exchange brief: Cultural evolution and the collective brain, Modern human-condition pressure, Christian apophatic love and discernment, Neoplatonic ascent and participation.
  • Practitioner-method lens: Neoplatonic ascent and return as the reasoning method. I asked of every variant not 'is it true?' but 'what must change in the one who would know it?' Critique of the method: ascent language can over-individualize awakening and hide that even the purified knower was formed by language, teachers, and community, so I corrected it with cultural-evolution distributed cognition.
  • Primary-text comparison: Plotinus, Enneads I.6.9, 'Never did eye see the sun unless it had first become sunlike; and never can the soul have vision of the First Beauty unless itself be beautiful', read against Muthukrishna and Henrich, Innovation in the Collective Brain (https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC4780534/), where a variant such as a boat that floats floats for anyone regardless of who holds it. The comparison reveals that the unit which must pass the test differs: variant in technology, knower in contemplative ascent.
  • Christian apophatic comparison: The Cloud of Unknowing on love rather than knowledge piercing the cloud, and the discernment tradition (Cassian, later Ignatian discernment of spirits), where what is tested is the disposition, will, and love of the person, not the portability of a proposition.
