Practice / under dialogue / low risk
Before you take on a new rule, name what it changes that your current rules do not.
To stop collecting near-identical self-rules that add monitoring without adding any real change in conduct or care.
Before you begin
Human problem
What this is for
Compulsive self-optimization, rule-collecting, and self-monitoring driven by achievement-contingent self-worth and a feed of optimization advice.
Modern human condition sourcesFor
Who may need it
Stable adults who keep adding practices, rules, and checks and feel behind or unsafe without the newest one.
Not for
When this may not fit
Not for people who lack any structure and genuinely need to build basic routines; not for OCD or scrupulosity, where rule-testing can feed the checking loop, and not for acute crisis, severe depression, mania, addiction withdrawal, or anyone under competent guidance that should be followed first.
Steps
- Write the new rule or practice you want to adopt in one sentence.
- List the rules and supports you already keep that point at the same problem.
- Ask one bounded question: what concrete act would the new rule change that the old ones would not already change?
- If you can name a real, different act, keep the new rule and drop one redundant old one. If you cannot, set the new rule down and return to the care you already have.
- Write one sentence: did refusing the duplicate leave you with less to monitor, or with more anxiety about not having it?
Notice
What to watch
- Whether you can name a genuinely different act, or only a different word for the same act.
- Whether dropping a duplicate brings relief or fear of being unprotected.
- Whether the urge to collect rules rises when you feel behind, judged, or compared.
- Whether the test itself starts to become another rule you must perform.
Caution
When to stop
Stop if the test becomes a new checking compulsion or increases anxiety, shame, or self-monitoring. This is a discernment aid, not a substitute for clinical care for OCD, scrupulosity, or anxiety.
Weakens if
What would count against it
After four uses it does not reduce the number of rules you carry or the time spent monitoring them, or if it increases guilt, indecision, or compulsive checking rather than reducing them.
Practice report
Tell us what happened
Reports become test pressure for this practice. Do not include names, contact details, medical details, instructions for the system, or anything you would not want stored as a private research record. If the practice worsened distress, stop and use appropriate human support.

Source Basis
- Mode: Critique. Active frontier: Remainder pressure after self-negation. This record does not add a new safeguard; it argues the recent correction cluster should be merged and tested, not extended.
- Internal near-neighbor cluster under audit: Codex records Do Not Check Alone (9336ed33), Help Must Be Able To Interrupt (241b86be), Ask What Expects Your Return (e9e2b7eb), Need Correction To Keep Insight (f06c1a58), plus carried teachings Keep What Can Correct You and What Kept Them Safe Cannot Be Read Backward. Each names a different correction variable and each claims incremental predictive value; none has been coded against the others.
- Convergence with Codex: Codex's own next_research_directions repeatedly warn, before adding another correction variable on this dense frontier, ask whether it changes an observable next act beyond expected return and ordinary help; if not, merge it. This finding formalizes that repeated self-warning into a single discriminant test rather than another variant.

- Primary-text comparison: notes/source-cards/buddhism-heart-sutra.md preserves a single practice form while negating attainment, showing one function can do the safeguarding work the cluster splits into many named variables; buddhism-dogen-uji and Huangbo no-seeking and Shinran Other Power locate safety in ongoing form rather than after-the-fact correction, which bounds the construct's scope. early-buddhism-sn-22-59-anattalakkhana-sutta supplies the committed-analysis counter-pass against over-merging. I subtracted named variables until only the distinction that changes a next act remained. Method critique: Daoist subtraction can erase a real but rare distinction and under-name harm, so it was paired with disciplined Buddhist not-self analysis to force a committed-assertion pass before merging.
