To interrupt the silent drift in which a useful practice becomes identity, and to give a person a quiet, repeatable way to notice when the relationship to their own healing has hardened.

Identity rigidity and meaning loss in people whose self-worth has become welded to a healing or improvement practice, even after the original wound has stabilized.

Long-term participants in a single defining practice (therapy, twelve-step recovery, daily meditation, structured self-improvement) at least three years in, where the original presenting problem is no longer acute.
Not for
When this may not fit
People in active crisis or early recovery, where the practice is still doing essential stabilizing work. People whose practice is light, varied, or not identity-defining. People in acute grief. Anyone for whom releasing or relativizing a practice would remove a current safety structure.
Steps
- Sit somewhere ordinary, not in your usual practice space.
- Name the practice you are checking. Say it out loud or write it down.
- Ask three questions in order. What did this practice come into my life to do. Is that work still active, mostly stable, or finished. If the work is mostly stable or finished, is this practice supposed to remain as my access to what it found, step back and stop being where I check my life, or quietly become how I work, eat, and treat other people.
- Do not act on the answer immediately. Note it and let a week pass.
- The next week, look for evidence in ordinary behavior. Are you still using the practice as identity, as access, or has its work moved into how you live.

This is not a method for leaving therapy, leaving recovery, leaving medication, or skipping clinical care. The question is about the relationship to a practice, not about whether the practice is needed. If the answer feels like permission to abandon support that is still doing real work, treat that as a sign to talk to a clinician or trusted person, not as a verdict.

After eight honest sessions you still cannot describe what the practice is supposed to do at its end. Or the question produces only anxiety without changing how you relate to the practice. Or trusted people who know you well say the practice is doing more for you than your answer admits.
