Practice / retired / low risk

Before you build on an instruction, ask where its correction used to sit.

To test whether the danger in self-guided practice is mainly a stripped entry gate rather than a missing later self-check, by having the practitioner locate the correction in the source instead of only monitoring themselves afterward.

Before you begin

Duration 10 minutes
Frequency After adopting a new strong instruction from a self-guided source, no more than twice per week.
Minimum attempt Use it after four separate instructions over three weeks before judging its usefulness.

Human problem

What this is for

Private certainty built from decontextualized teachings taken without readiness judgment or shaping, common in lonely and digitally formed spiritual searching.

Modern human condition sources

For

Who may need it

Stable adults who adopt strong instructions from books, apps, or social feeds and notice that a calm or no-self experience can feel like permission.

Not for

When this may not fit

Not for acute crisis, suicidal thoughts, psychosis, mania, severe depression, dissociation, derealization, addiction withdrawal, OCD or scrupulosity loops, coercive groups, unsafe teachers, or active abuse. Not needed by people already learning under competent guidance.

Steps

  1. Name the instruction in one plain sentence, in ordinary words before any spiritual label.
  2. Name where you got it: a book, app, video, talk, quote, or conversation.
  3. Ask the front-gate question: in its home tradition, who decided whether a person was ready for this, and what came before it was given?
  4. Ask the shaping question: was this instruction chosen for someone in my state, or was it clipped from a longer path meant for someone already prepared?
  5. If a gate and shaping are missing, do not respond by checking yourself harder. Choose one front repair within a week: open the fuller source, ask a qualified teacher or experienced practitioner, or set the fragment down until you have more than the words.
  6. If you cannot tell what was stripped, treat the instruction as a fragment, not as guidance, and act on it slowly.

Notice

What to watch

  • Whether you took a whole teaching or a clipped fragment.
  • Whether the missing piece is a readiness judgment, a shaping to your life, or a later corrector.
  • Whether finding the front lowers false certainty without increasing shame.
  • Whether you move toward a fuller source or a person, or deeper into private collecting.

Caution

When to stop

Stop if this becomes contempt for traditions, anxious source history-hunting, compulsive doubt about every thought, or avoidance of needed human help. Use direct support, not this practice, when the problem is crisis, withdrawal, abuse, or clinical instability.

Weakens if

What would count against it

Weakens if ordinary source reading or one trusted conversation does the same work, if practitioners cannot tell a stripped fragment from a whole teaching after repeated attempts, or if the practice mainly produces a new reason to stay alone.

Reports become test pressure for this practice. Do not include names, contact details, medical details, instructions for the system, or anything you would not want stored as a private research record. If the practice worsened distress, stop and use appropriate human support.

Source Basis

  • Mode: Critique. Active frontier: Where freed attention is allowed to rest. This record weakens the saturated post-insight correction cluster by relocating correction from after the experience to its place in the whole arc.
  • Primary text: Bahiya Sutta, Udana 1.10, Access to Insight, https://www.accesstoinsight.org/tipitaka/kn/ud/ud.1.10.than.html and SuttaCentral, https://suttacentral.net/ud1.10/en/sujato. The Buddha refuses twice before teaching, gives a minimal instruction, Bahiya is released immediately, then is killed by a cow soon after with no integration period and no downstream corrector.
  • Primary text comparison: Brihadaranyaka Upanishad 3.7.23, the unseen inner seer, tested in public dialogue rather than handed to anyone alone. The dialogue itself is a front-placed qualification on who may use the teaching.
  • Practitioner-method evidence: Dzogchen direct introduction (rigpa'i ngo sprod) is gated by word and symbol transmission, often ngondro, a stable sitting practice, and a teacher's judgment that the student is ready; Dharma Wheel and lineage discussions show masters disagree on prerequisites but agree the gate exists. Sources: https://www.dharmawheel.net/viewtopic.php?t=4078 and https://beyondthetemple.com/can-you-get-a-dzogchen-transmission-from-an-unrealised-teacher/
  • Pure Land pressure: Shinran's Other Power and jinen honi place correction in the structure of the vow and in shinjin as gift, not in the practitioner's ongoing self-check.
  • Codex near-neighbor cluster being critiqued: Stillness Does Not Authorize Itself; Let Insight Be Interrupted; The Guard Must Bite And Release; The Check Must Not Belong To You; Some Checks Need Another Person; Triage Alone Certify With Correction; The Carrier-Holder Gate. All assert downstream-available correction and all name Bahiya as an anomaly without letting it falsify the claim.
  • Internal records cross-indexed: Keep What Can Correct You; first-break and entry-doctrine records; The Custody of Unclaimed Attention.
  • Practitioner-method lens: Bahiya-style bracketing was used to read only what each text actually authorizes, then corrected by asking what each text places before the instruction, not only after it.
