Practice / retired / low risk

Before strong inward practice, name what surrounds it.

To test whether a self-loosening instruction remains connected to correction, ordinary duty, and care instead of becoming private certainty.

Before you begin

Duration 5 minutes before or after practice
Frequency No more than once per day, and at least three times across two weeks before judging usefulness.
Minimum attempt Three completed checks across two weeks.

Human problem

What this is for

Isolated spiritual self-work, loneliness, digital comparison, meaning loss, and anxiety about interpreting inner states correctly.

Modern human condition sources

For

Who may need it

Stable self-guided practitioners using practice books, apps, podcasts, online teachers, or mixed-tradition practice without regular human guidance.

Not for

When this may not fit

Not for acute crisis, suicidal ideation, mania, psychosis, severe dissociation, trauma flooding, addiction withdrawal, medical instability, coercive groups, or anyone who needs clinical care, peer recovery support, sleep, food, medication, or immediate human help first.

Steps

  1. Write the practice instruction in one plain sentence.
  2. Name where the instruction came from: teacher, text, community, app, book, or conversation.
  3. Name what the instruction is meant to prevent: grasping, forcing, pride, despair, avoidance, or self-judgment.
  4. Name one person, source passage, clinician, peer group, or trusted friend that could correct you if the practice made you less kind, less grounded, or less honest.
  5. Name one ordinary duty the practice must not cancel today.
  6. Name one stop sign: panic, unreality, grandiosity, despair, sleep loss, urge to isolate, neglect of responsibilities, or contempt for ordinary help.
  7. After practice, write one return action: answer a message, eat, rest, apologize, do one task, ask for help, or keep a promise.

Notice

What to watch

  • Whether the practice makes you more reachable or less reachable.
  • Whether you feel tempted to claim a special state or hide from correction.
  • Whether the body settles, tightens, or searches for another standard.
  • Whether the next ordinary action becomes simpler and kinder.
  • Whether the check becomes another way to grade yourself.

Caution

When to stop

Stop if the check increases fear, unreality, rumination, isolation, grandiosity, despair, or avoidance of needed help. This is not treatment and does not replace clinical, emergency, or peer recovery support.

Weakens if

What would count against it

Weakens if users report no added benefit over ordinary support, more rumination, more authority dependence, more shame about practice, or less willingness to seek help after two weeks.

Practice report

Tell us what happened

Reports become test pressure for this practice. Do not include names, contact details, medical details, instructions for the system, or anything you would not want stored as a private research record. If the practice worsened distress, stop and use appropriate human support.

Source Basis

  • Mode: Critique. This record narrows the active frontier by demoting the question of where freed attention rests and testing whether the surrounding path remains reachable after self-reference loosens.
  • Primary-text comparison: Udana 1.10 Bahiya Sutta, Thanissaro Bhikkhu translation, https://www.dhammatalks.org/suttas/KN/Ud/ud1_10.html, read as a no-location instruction that also begins with correction of false attainment by another voice.
  • Primary-text comparison: Brihadaranyaka Upanishad 3.7.23, Max Muller translation, https://sacred-texts.com/hin/sbe15/sbe15070.htm, read as the opposite move: seeing is gathered into the unseen seer and inner ruler through public dialogue.
  • Primary-text comparison: Tilopa, The Ganges Mahamudra Instructions, Lotsawa House, https://www.lotsawahouse.org/indian-masters/tilopa/ganges-mahamudra-instruction, where groundless mind and non-fixation remain close to guru reliance and habituation.
  • Primary-text comparison: Jigme Lingpa, Directly Seeing the Natural State, Lotsawa House, https://www.lotsawahouse.org/tibetan-masters/jigme-lingpa/directly-seeing-natural-state, where clear awareness is maintained by not forgetting, beginners are warned against confusion, and stages require an authentic teacher.
  • Christian apophatic pressure: Pseudo-Dionysius, Mystical Theology source card and SEP Pseudo-Dionysius, https://plato.stanford.edu/entries/pseudo-dionysius-areopagite/, where negation is embedded in hierarchy, liturgy, and received discipline rather than private silence alone.
  • Closest prior-art pressure: SEP Mysticism, https://plato.stanford.edu/entries/mysticism/, on apophatic mysticism, constructivism, common-core debates, and noetic claims; this strongly reduces novelty.
  • Cultural-evolution analogy and design constraint: cultural-evolution-the-secret-of-our-success source card and Muthukrishna and Henrich, Innovation in the Collective Brain, https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC4780534/, used only analogically for skill preservation through networks, variance, fidelity, and correction. • Consciousness-science constraint: consciousness-science-i-and-me-the-self-in-the-context-of-consciousness and consciousness-science-friston-fep source cards, used to keep self, ownership, report, and model-boundary claims empirical-adjacent rather than metaphysical proof. • Practitioner-method lens: Bahiya-style de-identification stripped the urge to locate an owner; Daoist reduction removed extra control; scientific critique then asked what observable support, correction, or conduct would change. Method critique: this lens can overvalue reachability and underhear direct-recognition traditions that say awareness is self-liberating.
