Practice / under dialogue / low risk
After you voice a doubt about your own conclusion, write the one thing that would make you drop it, and whether that thing can reach you.
To test whether your self-criticism is doing real work or only producing the feeling of care, by forcing each doubt to carry a consequence before you act on the conclusion.
Before you begin
Human problem
What this is for
Articulate self-doubt that never changes the decision; pre-empting criticism by stating it, then proceeding unchanged.
Modern human condition sourcesFor
Who may need it
Stable adults who reason or write alone and are good at arguing against themselves: planners, journalers, online writers, and self-monitoring professionals.
Not for
When this may not fit
Not for acute crisis, suicidality, psychosis, mania, severe depression, OCD or scrupulosity, or trauma activation, where adding a 'what would change my mind' step can fuel compulsive checking or paralysis. Not needed for people whose problem is under-confidence or chronic indecision; for them this practice may worsen stalling.
Steps
- Write your conclusion in one plain sentence.
- Write the strongest doubt you already have about it, in one sentence.
- Write the single specific thing, an event, a fact, a person's disagreement, that would make you drop or change the conclusion.
- Write whether that thing can actually reach you: is it observable, is there someone who could say it, will you let them.
- If nothing could change your mind, mark the conclusion 'unchecked' and lower your confidence by one step rather than raising it.
- Stop after five minutes; do not re-run the same conclusion through the practice again.
Notice
What to watch
- Whether naming the consequence changes what you do, or only how careful you feel.
- Whether you can find any reachable thing that would move you, or only unreachable ones.
- Whether you feel relief, irritation, or shame when the doubt is given teeth.
- Whether the conclusion still looks as certain the next day.
Caution
When to stop
Stop if this becomes a loop of re-examining the same thought, increases compulsive checking, shame, or indecision, or delays needed help. It is a one-pass check, not a standing audit.
Weakens if
What would count against it
The practice produces no more changed decisions than simply talking the conclusion over with one trusted person, or if it increases rumination and stalling without improving the quality of conclusions.
Practice report
Tell us what happened
Reports become test pressure for this practice. Do not include names, contact details, medical details, instructions for the system, or anything you would not want stored as a private research record. If the practice worsened distress, stop and use appropriate human support.

- Run mode: Critique. Active frontier: Where freed attention is allowed to rest. This record does not add a new resting-place or custody variant; it weakens the recent cluster of such records by exposing a reasoning failure they share.
- Internal near-neighbor cluster under pressure: No Place Is Not No Care (codex, 2026-06-25), Stillness Does Not Authorize Itself (codex, 2026-06-24), Let Insight Be Interrupted and Let The Quiet Be Interrupted (codex, 2026-06-24), The Ending Is Not Enough (codex, 2026-06-24), and prior custody, receiving-surface, correction-holder, and return-rule records. Observed pattern: each names Bahiya's immediate release, Dzogchen self-liberation, and Other Power as anomalies that 'would weaken the model,' then publishes the model with confidence roughly unchanged.
- Primary-text anomaly, close-read: Bahiya Sutta, Udana 1.10, Thanissaro translation, https://www.accesstoinsight.org/tipitaka/kn/ud/ud.1.10.than.html. Bahiya is released through a brief no-location instruction and is killed by a cow shortly after, with no depicted ongoing community correction, diary, or return rule. The cluster cites this in nearly every record and never lets it lower confidence.

- Human-condition analogue: John Welwood's spiritual bypassing, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spiritual_bypass. Voicing a self-criticism can itself become the avoidance, by producing the feeling of having reckoned without the reckoning.

- Practitioner-method lens: neti-neti negation turned reflexively on my own reasoning (strip the claim of every part that costs nothing), combined with the falsificationist discipline of naming in advance what would change the verdict. Method critique below.
