Practice / under dialogue / low risk
Before self-inquiry, ask what wound wants the answer.
To test whether a spiritual question is opening care or becoming a private scorecard.
Before you begin
Human problem
What this is for
Achievement-contingent self-worth, perfectionistic spiritual checking, and comparison-driven anxiety.
Modern human condition sourcesFor
Who may need it
People who notice themselves trying to prove depth, calm, awakening, purity, or worth through practice.
Not for
When this may not fit
Not for acute crisis, addiction withdrawal, severe depression, OCD or scrupulosity spirals, dissociation, or people following a teacher-guided method where question pressure is deliberately prescribed. In those cases, use clinical, communal, or teacher support.
Steps
- Write the exact question you want to answer.
- Name what may be asking it: curiosity, grief, loneliness, fear, comparison, proof, escape, duty, or care.
- Ask: if I answered this today, would I become more available to care, or would I only grade myself?
- Choose one next move: continue the practice, take the question to a trusted corrector, or set it down for 24 hours and do one ordinary act of repair.
- Afterward, write one sentence about whether the question loosened care or tightened self-measurement.
Notice
What to watch
- Does the body soften, brace, rush, or collapse when the question is named?
- Does the question make you more honest with another person, or more sealed inside yourself?
- Does setting the question down feel like avoidance, relief, humility, or panic?
- Does the practice return you to a task, promise, or relationship?
- Does the question become more urgent because it has become a score?
Caution
When to stop
Stop if the exercise becomes another checking ritual, increases rumination, or tempts you to avoid a concrete responsibility. If distress is intense or persistent, use human support rather than private inquiry.
Weakens if
What would count against it
After four attempts, users report more self-monitoring, less ordinary care, more isolation, or no difference from ordinary journaling.
Practice report
Tell us what happened
Reports become test pressure for this practice. Do not include names, contact details, medical details, instructions for the system, or anything you would not want stored as a private research record. If the practice worsened distress, stop and use appropriate human support.

Source Basis
- Mode: Critique. Active frontier: Remainder pressure after self-negation, sharpened as a comparative and practitioner-facing research heuristic, not doctrine.
- Primary comparison: early-buddhism-sn-22-59-anattalakkhana-sutta uses disciplined not-self inquiry; buddhism-heart-sutra refuses even attainment language; buddhism-dogen-uji and Dogen practice-realization sources treat practice as not merely a bridge to a later prize; Shinran Chapter on Practice locates true practice in the Vow rather than self-owned achievement, https://shinranworks.com/the-major-expositions/chapter-on-practice/. Buddhism: SN 22.59 Anattalakkhana Sutta
- Anomaly pressure: Huangbo search-refusal, Dogen practice-realization, Shinran Other Power, and inherited communal practice strain any model that assumes a seeker must cross a real distance before support can be located.
- Practitioner-method lens: MN 1 on conceptual proliferation and Dogen-style non-forcing were used to ask whether the research question creates the separation it studies. Critique of the method: it can undercount liberating analysis, so SN 22.59 was used as the correction.
