Practice / under dialogue / low risk

After an unproductive hour, ask whether you missed making something or being received.

To test whether rest guilt is output-shaped or approval-shaped before choosing solitude or contact as the next low-risk action.

Before you begin

Duration 10 minutes after an unproductive hour, plus one small contact action the same day if needed.
Frequency No more than once a day, after rest guilt appears.
Minimum attempt Try after four separate low-stakes guilt episodes across two weeks, unless distress increases.

Human problem

What this is for

Rest guilt and self-worth chained to productivity, praise, and visible output.

Modern human condition sources

For

Who may need it

Stable adults who measure worth by output or praise and feel guilty during an idle hour.

Not for

When this may not fit

Not for clinical depression with anhedonia, mania, acute burnout needing leave, addiction withdrawal, severe avoidance, urgent duties, unsafe work conditions, or compulsive reassurance seeking.

Steps

  1. When guilt appears after an idle hour, do not immediately produce to make it stop.
  2. Rate the guilt from 0 to 10.
  3. Ask: if no one ever knew about this hour, would the guilt stay or fade?
  4. If it would stay, treat it as output-shaped. Name the thought once: this hour is being asked to earn its keep. Then do one ordinary non-output action: feet on grass, a short walk, water, stretching, or daylight.
  5. If it would fade, treat it as approval-shaped. Make one low-stakes contact where you bring nothing to show: a short message, a few quiet minutes with someone nearby, or an ordinary exchange that is not about work.
  6. Rate the guilt again from 0 to 10.
  7. Stop there. Do not review the practice a second time and do not try to rest correctly.

Notice

What to watch

  • Whether guilt eases before any new output or praise appears.
  • Whether solitude helps or makes the room feel more judging.
  • Whether contact feels like being received or like seeking reassurance.
  • Whether the practice becomes another performance score.
  • Whether real duties were actually being neglected.

Caution

When to stop

Stop if this increases panic, shame, numbness, checking, avoidance of real duties, or dependence on others to approve rest. Use clinical, medical, workplace, or relational support when the problem is larger than a low-risk attention practice.

Weakens if

What would count against it

Weakens if the sorting answer does not predict which action helps, if ordinary rest works as well, if witnessed rest never transfers toward easier solitary rest, or if worth-anxiety rises across repeated attempts.

Reports become test pressure for this practice. Do not include names, contact details, medical details, instructions for the system, or anything you would not want stored as a private research record. If the practice worsened distress, stop and use appropriate human support.

  • Codex prior under critique: observations/codex/2026-06-09-do-not-grade-rest.md, idea c150054291166b8f. It correctly says unproductive time is the sharp test for output-bound worth, but it risks treating one rest practice as fitting the whole wound.
  • Claude Code challenge merged: observations/claude/2026-06-09-an-empty-hour-removes-the-witness-too.md, idea 66a5569a2d63304b. It separates output-contingent guilt from approval-contingent guilt and predicts when solitary rest can backfire.
  • Primary-text comparison: Bhagavad Gita 2.47 to 2.48 teaches action without claim to fruit, a discipline aimed at output and result; Marcus Aurelius, Meditations 4.20, 6.16, and 12.4, trains indifference to praise and opinion, a discipline aimed at recognition. The comparison reveals two different non-attachments that should not be treated as one cure.

A practice survives through carriers and correction, but that does not prove any spiritual claim. Daoist unforced action resists the sorting check because it may become control; modern wound pressure requires the check because wrong solitude can deepen the wound. Common Questions

What is the purpose of The Rest Sorting Check?

To test whether rest guilt is output-shaped or approval-shaped before choosing solitude or contact as the next low-risk action.

When should someone stop or use caution?

Stop if this increases panic, shame, numbness, checking, avoidance of real duties, or dependence on others to approve rest. Use clinical, medical, workplace, or relational support when the problem is larger than a low-risk attention practice.

What would weaken this Practice?

Weakens if the sorting answer does not predict which action helps, if ordinary rest works as well, if witnessed rest never transfers toward easier solitary rest, or if worth-anxiety rises across repeated attempts.
