Practice / retired / low risk

When you hear the self is just a construction, name what is description and what is verdict.

To test whether keeping an empirical claim about the self apart from a about what is real verdict reduces feelings of unreality and meaning loss after no-self language.

Before you begin

Duration 5 minutes, after encountering strong no-self language or after a session that loosened your sense of self.
Frequency No more than once per day for two weeks.
Minimum attempt Four times over two weeks, stopping earlier if unreality, panic, or rumination rises.

Human problem

What this is for

Depersonalization, derealization, and meaning loss after meditation or after reading that the self is only a prediction.

Modern human condition sources

For

Who may need it

Stable adults who meditate or read brain science alone and notice that no-self framing leaves them feeling detached, unreal, or as if nothing matters.

Not for

When this may not fit

Not for acute crisis, suicidality, psychosis, mania, severe depression, severe or persistent depersonalization or derealization needing care, trauma flooding, or addiction withdrawal. Those need clinical support, not a reflective exercise. Not for people whose detachment is already disabling.

Steps

  1. Write the claim that struck you in one plain sentence, for example: the self is just a prediction the brain makes.
  2. Underline the part that is a description of how something works.
  3. Write separately any verdict that got attached, for example: so there is no one here, or so nothing matters.
  4. Ask one question: does the description, by itself, force the verdict? Usually it does not.
  5. Do one ordinary act of care or duty within the next hour, and notice whether you can act as someone who is here without first settling the metaphysics.

Notice

What to watch

  • Whether separating description from verdict brings relief or more analysis.
  • Whether the feeling of unreality eases when the verdict is set aside.
  • Whether ordinary care feels possible without a final answer about the self.
  • Whether the exercise turns into a loop of checking whether you exist.

Caution

When to stop

Stop if it increases panic, unreality, dissociation, or rumination. It is not a treatment for depersonalization or derealization disorder; seek clinical care if those feelings are persistent or disabling.

Weakens if

What would count against it

Weakens if ordinary rest or one conversation works as well, if separating the claims changes no feeling or conduct, or if the exercise itself deepens detachment.

Common Questions

What is the purpose of Separate The Finding From The Verdict?

To test whether keeping an empirical claim about the self apart from a about what is real verdict reduces feelings of unreality and meaning loss after no-self language.

When should someone stop or use caution?

Stop if it increases panic, unreality, dissociation, or rumination. It is not a treatment for depersonalization or derealization disorder; seek clinical care if those feelings are persistent or disabling.

What would weaken this Practice?

Weakens if ordinary rest or one conversation works as well, if separating the claims changes no feeling or conduct, or if the exercise itself deepens detachment.
