Practice / published / low risk
When you feel sure you understand someone you love, name what you noticed and what could correct you.
To tell loving feeling apart from actual knowledge of a person, and to keep care open to being wrong.
Before you begin
Human problem
What this is for
Projection, loneliness inside closeness, caregiver burnout, and self-worth tied to uniquely understanding others.
Modern human condition sourcesFor
Who may need it
Stable adults in safe relationships, caregiving, parenting, mentoring, or helping roles who often act on a felt certainty about another person.
Not for
When this may not fit
Not for active abuse, coercion, stalking, refusal of contact, suicidal thoughts, severe depression, mania, psychosis, dissociation, addiction withdrawal, fresh trauma, or cases needing clinical, legal, pastoral, respite, or safeguarding help. Not for infant, dementia, or end-of-life care where the person cannot answer, since there the check is exposure and skilled reading, not direct correction. Not a tool for interrogating or surveilling a partner.
Steps
- Write one sentence: I am sure they feel or want this.
- Write what you actually observed in the last week that supports it: words, conduct, or body signals, not your feeling.
- Name one thing that could correct you: asking them plainly, a trusted person, their conduct over time, or simply waiting.
- If the only support is that you love them, mark it as feeling, not knowledge, and do not act on it as fact today.
- Choose the smallest correctable next step, including asking a direct question instead of assuming.
Notice
What to watch
- Whether the certainty came from observation or from the warmth of caring.
- Whether asking directly feels like relief or like a threat to your sense of being the one who understands.
- Whether the person becomes more real, or only more confirmed as the story you already held.
- Whether the check becomes a way to surveil or pressure rather than to stay open.
Caution
When to stop
Stop if this becomes interrogation, control, surveillance, or self-attack. It is not a substitute for honest conversation, therapy, or care.
Weakens if
What would count against it
It weakens if ordinary honest conversation or one trusted check works as well, or if it increases suspicion, rumination, control, or shame.
Practice report
Tell us what happened
Reports become test pressure for this practice. Do not include names, contact details, medical details, instructions for the system, or anything you would not want stored as a private research record. If the practice worsened distress, stop and use appropriate human support.

Source Basis
- Mode: Critique. The frontier 'Love as a way of knowing' is saturated, so this run weakens and proposes to retire most of the cluster rather than add another redescription.
- Cluster under audit: Release The Receipt, Love Needs A Life, Love Needs Two Questions, Love Must Stay Answerable, Love Keeps Correction Open, Love That Cannot Be Corrected Has Stopped Knowing, Love Knows Only While the Other Can Surprise You, Love Cannot Certify Itself, Love Needs A Witness, Love Needs More Than One Witness, Loving Them Is Not Knowing Them, Attention May Be Doing What Love Gets Credit For, Love Keeps Its Witnesses, When Love Feels Like Knowing Keep Asking, Love's Knowing Is Untested Where It Matters Most, Love Can Know What Is Not Yet There.
- Practitioner-method source: Daoist decrease (Dao De Jing 48) used to subtract each added correction condition until only the proximate cause of accuracy remains. Joined with Buddhist not-self (SN 22.59) to refuse a loving self that 'just knows'. Critique of the method: decrease can dismiss real motivational causation, so it was checked against the asymmetric-care anomaly where love produces the exposure that does the knowing.
- Primary-text comparison: 1 Corinthians 13 says love does not fail yet 'we know in part'; the Karaniya Metta Sutta disciplines goodwill by harmlessness, supportability, and willingness to be reproved. Read together, neither text claims love is a superior epistemic instrument; both subordinate love's knowing to partiality and correction.
- Closest prior pressure: Attention May Be Doing What Love Gets Credit For, and Love Cannot Certify Itself, already raised attention and exogenous certification. This record adds the program-level diagnosis and the retirement proposal.
- Method analogy, not proof: Lakatos on progressive versus degenerating research programmes, used to read monotonic auxiliary additions as a warning sign.
