Practice / retired / low risk

After a strong quiet, first ask whether it left a claim you could be wrong about.

To test whether correction is needed at all after a self-loosening state, so that conclusions get checked, plain rest stays uninspected, and distress gets human help.

Before you begin

Duration 5 to 7 minutes, plus one ordinary action within 24 hours.
Frequency After a notably strong quiet or self-loosening experience, no more than twice per week.
Minimum attempt Four uses over two weeks, unless it increases shame, self-monitoring, or withdrawal.

Human problem

What this is for

Spiritualized self-monitoring and isolation, where a solitary practitioner turns every calm or self-loosening experience into a verdict to be proven or corrected.

Modern human condition sources

For

Who may need it

Stable, nonclinical solo practitioners who notice themselves grading their inner states and who lack a steady teacher or community.

Not for

When this may not fit

Not for acute crisis, suicidal distress, psychosis, mania, severe depression, severe dissociation or derealization, addiction withdrawal, active abuse, or coercive groups; in those cases skip the sorting and seek care directly. Not for people with OCD or scrupulosity for whom the sorting question itself becomes compulsive checking.

Steps

  1. Sit normally. Do not decide yet whether anything important happened.
  2. Ask one question and answer it plainly: did this leave a claim about myself, reality, or what I owe others that could be wrong?
  3. If yes, write the claim in one sentence, set it aside for 24 hours, and before acting on it let one trusted person, text, or duty test it.
  4. If no, name it as ordinary rest and return to one real task or contact without grading the experience.
  5. If instead you feel frightened, unreal, or unable to function, stop the sorting and reach a person who can help: a friend, a clinician, or a crisis line.

Notice

What to watch

  • Whether the quiet actually produced a claim or only loosened your grip.
  • Whether looking for a corrector calms you or turns rest into another exam.
  • Whether ordinary contact or duty becomes easier after sorting.
  • Whether the sorting question itself starts to feel compulsive.

Caution

When to stop

Stop if the practice increases rumination, shame, compulsive checking, dissociation, or avoidance of needed care. It is not a substitute for therapy, medication, recovery support, or emergency help.

Weakens if

What would count against it

It performs no better than ordinary rest and a kind message, if it makes lonely practitioners more self-monitoring, or if it is used to label genuine distress as merely ordinary and so delay real help.

Source Basis

  • Run mode: Critique. Frontier: Remainder pressure after self-negation. This record narrows the saturated 'keep a corrector after self-negation' cluster rather than adding another variant.
  • Practitioner-method lens (thinking method): Huangbo's search-refusal, 'using the Buddha to seek Buddha and using mind to grasp Mind' (The Transmission of Mind, terebess.hu/zen/transm.pdf, selfdefinition.org Chun-chou record). I used it as a method by refusing to produce a separable verdict-object and then inspect it. Self-critique of the method is in the critique field.
  • Primary text: Dogen, Bendowa, on the oneness of practice and realization, 'to think practice and realization are separate is a non-Buddhist view' (Soto Zen Shusho Itto, sotozen.com key terms; afe.easia.columbia.edu/ps/japan/dogen.pdf). The path is built so it does not yield a post-state verdict to be ratified later.
  • Empirical adjacency: Lindahl and Britton, Varieties of Contemplative Experience (cheetahhouse.org/vce; journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/2167702621996340). Documents loss of sense of agency and ownership as adverse effects and the role of teacher relationship in trajectories.
  • Modern human-condition source: U.S. Surgeon General, Our Epidemic of Loneliness and Isolation, 2023 (hhs.gov/sites/default/files/surgeon-general-social-connection-advisory.pdf). Grounds the isolated-solo-practitioner cohort.
  • Internal near-neighbors this record narrows or distinguishes itself from: Keep What Can Correct You; Correction Must Survive Quiet; Triage Before Verdict (Codex 51f95917 / 48303804); Do Not Rename Ordinary Help (Codex 6936232c); Ask Who Holds The Silence.
  • Madhyamaka prasanga (MMK 18) used as the contrasting discipline: it is willing to diagnose the search itself as error, correcting search-refusal's tendency to excuse all post-hoc checking as grasping.

Common Questions

What is the purpose of Sort Before You Seek A Corrector?

To test whether correction is needed at all after a self-loosening state, so that conclusions get checked, plain rest stays uninspected, and distress gets human help.

When should someone stop or use caution?

Stop if the practice increases rumination, shame, compulsive checking, dissociation, or avoidance of needed care. It is not a substitute for therapy, medication, recovery support, or emergency help.

What would weaken this Practice?

It performs no better than ordinary rest and a kind message, if it makes lonely practitioners more self-monitoring, or if it is used to label genuine distress as merely ordinary and so delay real help.
