Practice / under dialogue / low risk
After describing an inner state twice, stop and let it be checked instead of named again.
To break the loop where finer self-description substitutes for an observation that could correct it.
Before you begin
Human problem
What this is for
Rumination disguised as insight, and self-worth tied to producing the right account of one's own experience.
Modern human condition sourcesFor
Who may need it
Stable adults who journal, meditate, or self-reflect and notice they keep re-describing the same state.
Not for
When this may not fit
Not for acute crisis, suicidal thoughts, psychosis, mania, severe depression, dissociation or derealization, addiction withdrawal, fresh grief needing care, OCD or scrupulosity loops, trauma activation, unsafe authority, or anyone whose real need is rest, sleep, food, medical care, or direct human contact.
Steps
- Notice that you have re-described the same inner state at least twice.
- Write the plainest one-sentence version, with no spiritual or technical words.
- Ask: what could correct this sentence today, a trusted person who can hear it or a change I could watch in my conduct?
- If a person is safe and available, say the one sentence to them as a question, not a conclusion, and stop describing for the day.
- If no one is available, do one ordinary act of care, work, or contact, and leave the state unnamed until tomorrow.
Notice
What to watch
- Whether the urge to find a better word loosens once you stop.
- Whether the plain sentence leads to contact, rest, or an ordinary act.
- Whether the check itself becomes a new thing to perform or grade.
Caution
When to stop
Stop if this increases rumination, shame, compulsive checking, or withdrawal. It is not a substitute for therapy, medical care, or direct human support.
Weakens if
What would count against it
Ordinary rest or one trusted conversation works as well, or the practice becomes another ritual of self-monitoring rather than a way to stop describing.
Practice report
Tell us what happened
Reports become test pressure for this practice. Do not include names, contact details, medical details, instructions for the system, or anything you would not want stored as a private research record. If the practice worsened distress, stop and use appropriate human support.

Source Basis
- Critique mode selected: the active frontier on where freed attention may rest is saturated with near-duplicate records, so this run weakens and freezes rather than adds a category.
- Thinking-method lens: Zhuangzi fasting of the mind and Dao De Jing 48 diminishing, used by subtracting each proposed rest-location until only the unmade observation remained. Critique of the lens: subtraction can dismiss real distinctions as clutter, so it was checked against the primary-text anomalies below.
- Frontier cluster treated as one object: The Custody of Unclaimed Attention, Rest Where Correction Can Reach, No Owner Is Not No World, Not Every Quiet Needs a Place to Land, Quiet Is Not A Verdict, The Map of Rest Was Never Tested, Asking Where Attention Rests Changes The Answer, Where It Rests Is a Leading Question, Quiet Must Stay Reachable, The Guide Is Not a Place, Help Must Match The Opening, To Report the Quiet Is to Place It.
- Primary-text anomalies that refuse a single placement: Udana 1.10 Bahiya (no you in the seen), Brihadaranyaka 3.7.23 (unseen seer as Self), Tilopa Ganges Mahamudra (no ground, yet rely on the guru), Pseudo-Dionysius Mystical Theology (beyond affirmation and negation). The comparison reveals that the loudest disagreements are about permitted speech after the self loosens, not yet about a measured lived event.
- Empirical-adjacent method that could run the test: Petitmengin micro-phenomenological interviewing and Hurlburt Descriptive Experience Sampling, used as the means to gather a first report under neutral prompts before tradition vocabulary is supplied.
- Modern human-condition grounding: Curran and Hill on rising perfectionism, and the Surgeon General social connection advisory, for the over-auditor cohort that keeps producing finer self-descriptions in private.
