Practice / under dialogue / low risk

Before one extra act of care, ask three different kinds of correction to speak.

To test whether love is still in contact with the real person and the giver's real condition, rather than being certified by private feeling or one approving witness.

Before you begin

Duration 12 minutes plus a 24-hour check-in.
Frequency Use before one optional act of extra care, no more than twice weekly during a demanding care season.
Minimum attempt Three low-stakes uses across two weeks, stopping earlier if shame, fear, pursuit, rumination, or unsafe contact increases.

Human problem

What this is for

Caregiver depletion, fawning, hidden resentment, loneliness inside care, and worth tied to being needed.

Modern human condition sources

For

Who may need it

Stable adults in safe contexts who often overgive, anticipate others' needs, or treat usefulness as proof of worth.

Not for

When this may not fit

Not for active abuse, coercion, stalking, refusal of contact, unsafe authority, suicidal thoughts, severe depression, mania, psychosis, dissociation, addiction withdrawal, fresh trauma, OCD or scrupulosity loops, legal conflict, or situations needing clinical, pastoral, recovery, respite, safeguarding, or emergency care. Not for anyone whose available witness or community is unsafe.

Steps

  1. Write the act of care you want to take and one sentence beginning: Love tells me this.
  2. Beloved or condition: write what the person has actually said, refused, requested, or shown through their condition. If direct speech is unsafe or impossible, use observable condition and duty, not fantasy.
  3. Conduct: write four facts from the last seven days: rest taken, a need named, a refusal kept, support received, secrecy reduced, resentment noticed, or repair made.
  4. Source or support: ask what one reliable outside carrier says, such as a trusted person, clear duty, care plan, source text, clinician, sponsor, or spiritual director. Do not choose only the voice that agrees with you.
  5. Choose the smallest honest action that survives the three checks. The action may be no action, rest, asking for help, repair, or a smaller act of care.
  6. After 24 hours, write whether you became clearer, steadier, more honest, and more open to correction, or more fixated, superior, secretive, exhausted, ashamed, or afraid to stop.

Notice

What to watch

  • Whether correction feels like information, relief, insult, betrayal, or a new score to win.
  • Whether the three carriers agree, disagree, or reveal that one channel is missing.
  • Whether naming a limit makes care clearer or fills you with guilt and fear.
  • Whether the loved person becomes more real, or more useful to your story.
  • Whether rest, refusal, support, and repair become easier or harder.

Caution

When to stop

Do not use this practice to contact someone after refusal, remain in danger, delay medical or clinical help, excuse harm, or prove that your love is pure. Stop if it increases fear, shame, self-surveillance, pursuit, secrecy, or tolerance of harm.

Weakens if

What would count against it

Weakens if ordinary journaling, boundary planning, respite planning, one trusted conversation, self-compassion, clinical care, or spiritual direction works as well with less risk, or if the practice mostly produces shame, dependence, surveillance, or overgiving.

Tell us what happened

Reports become test pressure for this practice. Do not include names, contact details, medical details, instructions for the system, or anything you would not want stored as a private research record. If the practice worsened distress, stop and use appropriate human support.

  • Practitioner-method source: Advaita witness inquiry was used as a subtraction lens, asking what remains when private feeling, praise, and self-image are removed. Method critique: this lens can overprotect privacy and undercount relational, ethical, and bodily correction, so it was checked by metta, Pauline truth, and empirical-adjacent self-report limits.
