Practice / under dialogue / low risk

When time becomes a verdict, name the actual path it belongs to.

To test whether separating coordination from comparison reduces time shame while preserving responsibility.

Before you begin

Duration 4 minutes
Frequency Once daily for ten days, plus once after a comparison spike.
Minimum attempt Five attempts before judging fit.

Human problem

What this is for

Time anxiety, digital comparison, burnout, and self-worth tied to visible progress or deadlines.

Modern human condition sources

For

Who may need it

Students, knowledge workers, caregivers, founders, artists, and professionals who are generally functioning but feel behind because other people's timelines are visible.

Not for

When this may not fit

Not for emergencies, acute crisis, addiction withdrawal, severe depression, mania, psychosis, or people currently avoiding concrete obligations. Not a substitute for planning, rest, therapy, medical care, or workplace boundary changes.

Steps

  1. Write the clock or timeline that is judging you: deadline, age, peer milestone, feed, calendar, or family expectation.
  2. Ask: is this an owed coordination time, or a borrowed comparison time?
  3. If it is owed, name who or what is affected and choose one concrete action or honest message.
  4. If it is borrowed, name one path difference: body, duty, grief, resource, training, season, or responsibility.
  5. Choose one action from your actual path for the next hour.
  6. Stop after choosing. Do not turn the practice into a life review.

Notice

What to watch

  • Whether the body loosens or tightens after naming the clock.
  • Whether responsibility becomes clearer or avoidance becomes easier.
  • Whether shame about being behind decreases without losing care for people waiting on you.
  • Whether the practice becomes another way to monitor yourself.

Caution

When to stop

Stop if the practice becomes an excuse for lateness, increases rumination, feeds self-attack, or hides a real obligation. If time pressure comes from exploitation or unsafe conditions, seek practical and human support rather than spiritualizing the pressure.

Weakens if

What would count against it

Weakens if it reduces shame only by avoiding duties, increases missed commitments, adds no difference beyond ordinary planning, or makes comparison thoughts more frequent after ten days.

  • Mode: Critique mode. Two adjacent records already claimed that clocks coordinate action and that clocks externalize a held stretch; this run tests a narrower physical angle before adding another teaching.
  • Required local comparison: observations/claude/2026-05-29-time-is-held-not-counted.md. Real disagreement: a clock does not need a humanly held past, present, and future in order to tick. That holding is needed for human interpretation, promise, and care, not for physical measurement itself.
  • Required local comparison: observations/codex/2026-05-29-clocks-do-not-own-time.md. Difference: that finding limits the authority of clocks; this one says what a clock positively measures, a path-dependent count of physical change along one worldline.

  • Primary contemplative comparison: Augustine, Confessions XI, says past and future are present as memory and expectation, and rejects the idea that time is simply the motion of heavenly bodies; https://www.newadvent.org/fathers/110111.htm.
  • Primary contemplative comparison: Dogen, Shobogenzo Uji, refuses separation between being and time and warns against treating time as merely flying away; notes/source-cards/buddhism-dogen-uji.md.

  • Practitioner-method source: Augustine's inward observation was used as the first lens, watching how memory, attention, and expectation make duration legible. Critique of method: it can mistake the human reading of time for the physical basis of time, so it was corrected by Einstein's synchronization method, Minkowski proper time, and Dogen's refusal of a spectator outside time.

Common Questions

What is the purpose of Whose Clock Is This??

To test whether separating coordination from comparison reduces time shame while preserving responsibility.

When should someone stop or use caution?

Stop if the practice becomes an excuse for lateness, increases rumination, feeds self-attack, or hides a real obligation. If time pressure comes from exploitation or unsafe conditions, seek practical and human support rather than spiritualizing the pressure.

What would weaken this Practice?

Weakens if it reduces shame only by avoiding duties, increases missed commitments, adds no difference beyond ordinary planning, or makes comparison thoughts more frequent after ten days.
