Teaching candidate / under dialogue
Before you set two teachings against each other, ask what each one is even about.
A disagreement between spiritual teachings is not real until they address the same thing at the same point in a path.
The Teaching
It is easy to collect sentences that sound opposed. One says there is no one here. One says the deepest self remains. One says awareness knows itself. One says God is beyond every word. You can stack these and feel that you must choose a winner.
But look closer. One sentence is about what is left when you watch your own seeing. One is about who you most deeply are. One is about the nature of awareness. One is about God. They are not four answers to one question. They are four answers to four questions.
When you feel forced to decide which teaching is true, first ask what each one is talking about and when it is meant to be heard. Some apparent fights disappear once you see that the speakers were never pointing at the same thing.
Human problem
What this is for
Confusion, false certainty, and private isolation that come from assembling incompatible spiritual instructions across traditions and treating them as rival answers.
Modern human condition sourcesFor
Who may need it
Self-directed cross-tradition readers, app meditators, and online seekers who mix teachings from feeds, books, and retreats.
Pressure survived
Why it stands for now
Survived the primary-text contrast between Bahiya's no-location, Brihadaranyaka's hidden seer, Mahamudra and Dzogchen's groundless self-knowing awareness, and Pseudo-Dionysius's God beyond affirmation and negation, by separating object from stage rather than forcing one custody answer.

Tests
Two Teachings Check Diary Pilot
Stable cross-tradition readers using the Two Teachings Check should report less forced winner-picking, fewer false all-paths-agree or all-paths-conflict claims, and more willingness to ask a teacher or trusted person, without increased rumination or contempt. If ordinary source reading or one knowledgeable conversation performs as well, or if the check produces paralysis, the practice weakens.
Next: Run a two-week screened diary pilot against ordinary source reading, one trusted conversation, and a simple pause-before-adopting rule, excluding crisis, scrupulosity, and unsafe authority cases.
Evidence Trail
Source Basis
- Run mode: Critique. The active frontier asks where freed attention is allowed to rest. This record weakens the frontier by challenging its unit of analysis rather than adding another resting-place or correction category.
- Primary-text comparison: Udana 1.10 Bahiya, where seeing is narrowed until no 'you' can be located in sense experience; Brihadaranyaka Upanishad 3.7.23, where the unseen seer is named as the inner ruler and Self; Tilopa's Ganges Mahamudra, where mind has no supporting ground yet rests as self-knowing awareness; Pseudo-Dionysius, Mystical Theology, where the divine Cause is placed beyond both affirmation and negation. https://www.dhammatalks.org/suttas/KN/Ud/ud1_10.html ; https://sacred-texts.com/hin/sbe15/sbe15070.htm ; https://www.lotsawahouse.org/indian-masters/tilopa/ganges-mahamudra-instruction ; https://www.tertullian.org/fathers/areopagite_06_mystic_theology.htm
- Practitioner-method lens: Bahiya-style bracketing, used to attend only to what each text actually addresses before assuming the texts answer one shared question. Method critique: bracketing can flatten ontological and devotional commitments into mere experience, erasing that one text is about sense data, another about the Self, another about awareness, and another about God.
- Closest prior-art pressure: Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy, Mysticism (Stace, Smart, Zaehner, Forman, Katz); Forman on pure consciousness; Fasching on witness-consciousness; Katz constructivism. These sort experiences and doctrines but do not check whether the compared sources address the same object at the same stage.
- Internal near-neighbor pressure noted for merge, not as openers: The Custody of Unclaimed Attention, Rest Where Correction Can Reach, Not Every Quiet Needs a Place to Land, Asking Where Attention Rests Changes The Answer, The Map of Rest Was Never Tested, First Ask If There Is Distance, and First Ask What the Words Do.
- Modern human-condition grounding: U.S. Surgeon General social connection advisory and youth social media advisory, for cross-tradition seekers who assemble incompatible instructions from feeds, apps, and books.

What would make us revise this
Weakens if traditions insist the seer, awareness, and absence are one disputed referent, so that matching objects only hides a real disagreement. Weakens if object and stage cannot be coded with usable agreement, if matched comparison changes no verdicts, or if the teaching mainly licenses readers to refuse all comparison.

Is this a public Teaching?
No. This is a teaching candidate kept as research trail. The public Teachings page carries the smaller distilled set.
