After quiet, do not hurry to decide where your attention belongs.
Some practices do not move attention to a new home; they ask you to stop pinning it anywhere. For a person who turns calm into a verdict, asking where it now belongs is the same pinning the quiet just loosened.
The Teaching
When a practice leaves you still, a quick question arrives: where does this belong now, who owns it, what does it prove. Notice that the question wants to pin the stillness in place. Some paths name a place to rest. Some refuse every place on purpose. If your path refuses, do not invent a home for the quiet. Ask instead what the practice tells you not to do: do not insert a verdict, do not grade yourself, do not claim the calm as a rank. Then return to one ordinary act of care. A quiet that has to be filed somewhere has already started working again as judgment.
Human problem
What this is for
Achievement-contingent self-worth and digital comparison that turn a calm or self-loosening state into a private verdict about progress, worth, or failure.
Modern human condition sourcesFor
Who may need it
Stable self-guided meditators, app users, and between traditions readers who, after quiet, immediately try to name where their attention now belongs or what it proves.
Pressure survived
Why it stands for now
Survived the contrast between Bahiya and Mahamudra, which give no recipient, and Brihadaranyaka, which does. It does not claim all paths refuse a home; it narrows to the paths that forbid fixing and to people who turn stillness into a score.

Forbid-The-Move Versus Find-The-Home Pilot
For stable self-grading practitioners, naming the forbidden move and returning to care will reduce post-quiet self-verdicts and posting urges more than asking where attention now belongs, without increasing floating. If the where prompt performs as well, or if the refusal increases unreality or withdrawal, the practice is weakened.
Next: Run a two-week diary trial comparing Do Not File the Quiet against a where-does-it-rest prompt, ordinary rest, one trusted conversation, and ACT self-as-context plus values action, tracking self-grading, posting urge, floating, derealization, loneliness, and ordinary action.

Source Basis
- Mode: Critique. The active frontier on where freed attention rests is saturated, so this run pressures the frontier's central axis rather than adding another resting-place category.
- Thinking-method lens: Bahiya-style bracketing, applied to the research question itself by refusing to insert a locating 'you' or a recipient into the analysis before checking whether the source permits one. Method critique: this lens can erase traditions that genuinely name a recipient, and can erase the grounding that destabilized practitioners need.
- Primary-text comparison: Udana 1.10 Bahiya, https://www.dhammatalks.org/suttas/KN/Ud/ud1_10.html, gives no recipient and forbids inserting a 'you'; Brihadaranyaka Upanishad 3.7.23, https://sacred-texts.com/hin/sbe15/sbe15070.htm, names the unseen seer as the inner ruler and does assign a recipient; Tilopa's Ganges Mahamudra, https://www.lotsawahouse.org/indian-masters/tilopa/ganges-mahamudra-instruction, says mind has no supporting ground and warns against fixation while keeping guru reliance; Pseudo-Dionysius Mystical Theology places the divine Cause beyond affirmation and negation. The comparison shows these instructions do not share a recipient; they share a forbidden move (refixing attention onto a location or owner), and disagree about whether a recipient may then be named.
- Near-neighbor pressure inside the project: The Custody of Unclaimed Attention, Not Every Quiet Needs a Place to Land, No Owner Is Not No World, Quiet Tells You What To Do Not Where To Rest, The Silence Needs A Stop, and The Check Can Become A Chain.
- Closest external prior art: Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy on Mysticism (Stace, Forman, Katz) on union, identity, and apophasis; Robert Sharf on the rhetoric of meditative experience; Lindahl et al., Varieties of Contemplative Experience, on appraisal-shaped outcomes.
- Lineage-exchange constraint, used as design pressure not as proof: Christian apophatic love (knowledge corrected by unknowing) and cultural-evolution transmission (skills need correction networks) both warn against a private inner verdict; per the contamination audit, neither is treated as evidence for a spiritual claim.
- Modern human-condition grounding: modern-human-condition-surgeon-general-social-connection-advisory and modern-human-condition-youth-mental-health-social-media-advisory, for loneliness, withdrawal, digital comparison, and achievement-contingent self-worth. What would make us revise this
Weakens if no-fixation practitioners reliably report a felt location without being asked, if naming a recipient reduces self-grading better than refusing one, or if for the target cohort the refusal increases floating, derealization, or withdrawal.

Is this a public Teaching?
No. This is a teaching candidate kept as research trail. The public Teachings page carries the smaller distilled set.
