Teaching / weakened

Do not make a borrowed sentence your identity before it has made you more honest with someone.

Borrowed spiritual language belongs to doctrine only after its source can regenerate it, and belongs to a seeker only after it bears fruit in conduct, contact, and correction.

First Honesty

The Teaching

A sentence can steady you before you fully understand where it came from. Let it steady you if it helps you call someone back, keep a promise, apologize, serve, wait, or stop a harm.

Do not turn it into a badge. When you teach it, publish it, or build a life around it, ask what practice carried it, who may correct it, and what would make it false in use.

Personal comfort and public teaching are not the same act. Treat each with the care it needs.

Human problem

What this is for

Loneliness, feeling out of place, digital comparison, and meaning loss among people who borrow spiritual language to find belonging or identity.

Modern human condition sources

For

Who may need it

Stable spiritually eclectic adults and older teens who gather teachings from books, teachers, podcasts, social media, or mixed communities and are not in acute clinical distress.

Pressure survived

Why it stands for now

Survived critique from comparison theory, the Chandogya and SN 22.59 carrier conflict, Dogen's practice-realization pressure, social-connection grounding, and checking-risk cautions by narrowing the claim into two distinct gates.

Contact First Pilot

Stable eclectic seekers using the contact-first practice should report less rumination, less identity-display urgency, and more concrete repair than a provenance-first journaling check. If the provenance-first check performs better, the model is weakened.

Next: Run a small opt-in pilot with exclusion screening and compare against ordinary reflection and source-first checking.

pending

Scrupulosity Safety Screen

People with checking or scrupulosity patterns should be more likely to experience the source-check step as compulsive. If screening and contact-first sequencing do not reduce that risk, the practice should be narrowed or retired for this cohort.

Next: Add screening questions and stop criteria before any practice pilot; exclude clinical checking loops and refer to trained care.

Evidence Trail

Source Basis

  • Mode: Critique. Active frontier: Translation strain as a test of convergence. This run narrows the frontier by splitting the comparison gate from the seeker-facing practice gate.
  • Primary-text comparison: Chandogya Upanishad 6.8.7 presents the identity teaching that the self is the real, while SN 22.59 tests each aggregate as not self. The comparison shows the same surface move, loosening ordinary identity, carried by incompatible authority and verification rules.
  • Practitioner-method source: Dogen's practice-realization in Bendowa, via local prior work and Bielefeldt's Dogen's Manuals of Zen Meditation, used as a lens for testing truth through enacted practice. Critique of the lens: it can make source history look secondary even when community, lineage, and harm require source accountability.
  • Near-neighbor prior art: Jonathan Z. Smith, In Comparison a Magic Dwells; Oliver Freiberger, Elements of a Comparative Methodology in the Study of Religion; Raimon Panikkar, homeomorphic equivalence. These cover comparison, redescription, and functional likeness, but not the split between doctrine provenance and seeker care.
  • Modern human-condition grounding: modern-human-condition-surgeon-general-social-connection-advisory on loneliness as a deficit of connection; modern-human-condition-youth-mental-health-social-media-advisory on digital comparison and identity pressure. Modern Human Condition: Our Epidemic of Loneliness and Isolation Modern Human Condition: Social Media and Youth Mental Health
  • Clinical-adjacent caution used analogically: Salkovskis on reassurance and checking in OCD, plus van den Hout and Kindt on repeated checking and memory distrust. This is not evidence that ordinary seekers have OCD; it warns that verification rituals can worsen doubt in vulnerable people.
  • Local Codex and Claude pressure: observations/codex/2026-05-30-ask-who-taught-the-answer.md and reviews/dialogues/2026-05-30-after-the-non-fit-exclusions-does-the-practice-still-reach-lonely-comfor.md.

What would make us revise this

Weaken if contact-first practice does not reduce isolation or rumination, if provenance-first discernment helps the target cohort more, or if hybrid communities show a better third path that protects both source accountability and present fruit.
