Teaching / weakened

Use a practice until it helps you live better; do not carry it as proof that you are better.

A practice is incomplete unless it gives guidance for its own after-use: what to keep, what to release, and what must become conduct.

After Use

The Teaching

Good tools can become heavy. A rule that once helped you see can become a badge. A practice that once steadied you can become another way to measure yourself.

Before you trust an insight, ask what it asks of you next. Some insights need continued practice. Some need release. Some are only real when they appear as patience, repair, courage, or ordinary care.

Do not throw away a road while you are still crossing. Do not carry it forever because it once saved you. Let the use decide the carrying.

Human problem

What this is for

Achievement-contingent self-worth, burnout, compulsive self-improvement, and spiritual identity built from tools that once helped.

Modern human condition sources

For

Who may need it

Achievement-driven professionals, students, founders, artists, caregivers, and committed practitioners who turn methods, results, or insights into proof of personal worth.

Pressure survived

Why it stands for now

Prior-art pressure from raft, ladder, upaya, apophatic unsaying, Nagarjuna and Wittgenstein, plus anomaly pressure from Heart Sutra reliance, Rinzai curriculum after kensho, and Dogen practice-realization identity.

After-Use Safety Check

The After-Use Check should reduce worth-pressure for achievement-driven users without increasing avoidance or rumination. If rumination, shame, or responsibility-avoidance rises, the practice is weakened or retired.

Next: Run a two-week self-report pilot with measures for worth-pressure, rumination, responsibility-follow-through, and perceived usefulness.

What would make us revise this

Weaken this teaching if practitioner reports show that after-use guidance does not reduce clinging, checking, or identity pressure, or if historical sources show that all traditions already teach the same after-use sequence without meaningful variation.
