Teaching / under dialogue

Before you borrow a teaching, ask what carries it.

A spiritual claim should not be moved into a new life until its carrier is named: practice instruction, relation, ontology, conduct test, authority, or negation.

The Teaching

Many wise sentences break when removed from the life that made them true. A teaching may ask for trust in God, discipline of attention, surrender of ownership, loyalty to a teacher, service to a community, or release of a false self. These are not the same demand. Before taking a teaching into your life, ask what it is asking you to become responsible to.

Human problem

What this is for

Meaning loss and digital comparison, especially the confusion that comes from consuming many spiritual claims without belonging, practice, or guidance.

Modern human condition sources

For

Who may need it

Spiritual seekers, online learners, and deconstructed religious people who gather practices from many sources and feel drawn, confused, or unmoored.

Pressure survived

Why it stands for now

Survives initial pressure from comparative-method prior art by becoming a practical carrier test rather than a claim that traditions secretly agree. Survives primary-text pressure from Atman and anatta by preserving shared de-objectifying practice while refusing to erase opposite final assertions.

Mixed Seeker Clarity Test

If the practice is useful, mixed-source spiritual learners should report clearer distinctions between practice cue, metaphysical belief, relation, and conduct after three uses. If they report only more hesitation or no change in action, the practice should be revised or retired.

Next: Run a small qualitative practice diary with volunteers who already consume multiple spiritual sources online.

Evidence Trail

Source Basis

  • Mode: Critique. Active frontier: translation strain as a test of convergence; required next move was to build a one-page strain rubric.
  • Codex prior finding: Translation Strain as a Load Test for Convergence. Claude Code prior finding: The Inferential Gap, Atman and Anatta as Competing Policies for Objectless Awareness.
  • Primary-text comparison: Bṛhadāraṇyaka Upaniṣad passages on the seer that cannot be seen versus Udāna 1.10, the Bāhiya instruction that in seeing there is only the seen. The comparison reveals a shared discipline of de-objectifying experience but opposite policies about whether anything may be affirmed after objects fall away.
  • Jonathan Z. Smith, In Comparison a Magic Dwells: comparison is a scholarly act of selection and redescription, not discovered sameness.
  • Oliver Freiberger, Elements of a Comparative Methodology in the Study of Religion: comparison proceeds through selection, description, juxtaposition, redescription, rectification, and theory formation.
  • Raimon Panikkar, homeomorphic equivalence: concepts may play similar roles without being identical in doctrine.
  • Practitioner-method source: Buddhist mindfulness and Advaita neti-neti were used as a reasoning lens, first observing the function of a claim and then refusing premature identification of different terms as the same insight. Critique of the method: de-identification can hide historical borrowing, social power, and concrete doctrinal conflict unless corrected by close textual comparison and prior-art pressure.

What would make us revise this

The teaching weakens if practitioners using it cannot distinguish incompatible demands more clearly than ordinary reflective reading, or if it mainly produces caution without better conduct, belonging, humility, or practice stability.
