Teaching candidate / under dialogue
Before you rest, ask whether your guilt wants work or wants to be seen.
Guilt about an unproductive hour is not one thing. For some, worth rises and falls with producing; for others, it rises and falls with being praised. Rest alone can ease the first and worsen the second, because an empty hour takes away both the output and the audience.
The Teaching
When an idle hour fills you with guilt, do not assume the cure is to rest harder. Ask one plain question: if no one ever knew about this hour, would the guilt still be there. If the guilt is about not making anything, then let the hour stay empty and stop grading it. If the guilt is really about not being seen, sitting alone will not help, because you have removed the very thing your worth was leaning on. In that case the medicine is not deeper solitude but one small hour where someone receives you while you have made nothing to show. Let yourself be company, not output.
Human problem
What this is for
Achievement-contingent self-worth and rest guilt, specifically the version where guilt does not ease in solitary rest because worth is tied to being seen and praised rather than to producing.
Modern human condition sourcesFor
Who may need it
Students, early-career professionals, founders, and creators whose worth tracks visibility, praise, and reaction, and who feel worse, not better, when they rest alone.
Pressure survived
Why it stands for now
Survives the saturated-frontier pressure by refusing to add another release-the-result synonym; it splits the cohort the wound implies and predicts when the standard practice backfires. Survives the primary-text contrast between Gita non-attachment from fruit and Stoic indifference to praise as two different disciplines.

Witnessed Versus Solitary Rest Trial
If the split is real, people who answer that their guilt would fade if unseen should show greater guilt reduction after a witnessed unproductive hour than after a solitary ungraded one, while people who answer that their guilt would stay should show the reverse or no difference. If both groups respond the same to solitary ungraded rest, the model is weakened.
Next: Run a small screened crossover diary study comparing solitary ungraded rest, witnessed unproductive rest, and ordinary rest, with the sorting question recorded before each condition. Exclude anhedonia, mania, and burnout needing leave.

Source Basis
- Mode: Critique. The frontier on effort and gift is saturated, so this run narrows the cohort rather than adding another synonym for releasing the result.
- Required wound grounding: modern-human-condition-wound-harvest-achievement-worth-20260603, especially its discriminating question, does the person's guilt drop when output is removed or only when output is praised, and its note that gratitude journaling felt hollow while cognitive defusion helped.
- Near-duplicate pressure: Codex, Rest Is Not Another Result, and The Result Release trial; Claude, Some People Cannot Receive An Unearned Hour. This record argues those treat one cohort where the wound names two.
- Primary-text comparison: Bhagavad Gita 2.47 to 2.48 teaches action without attachment to the fruit of action, a discipline aimed at output; Marcus Aurelius, Meditations 4.20, 6.16, and 12.4, teaches indifference to praise and the opinions of others, a discipline aimed at recognition. The comparison reveals two different non-attachments, and the standard unproductive-hour practice trains only the first.
- Practitioner-method lens: ACT cognitive defusion from worth-thoughts, used as the reasoning method to separate a thought from a verdict. Method critique: defusion done alone can quietly assume the wound is private and self-generated, when for some people the worth-thought is anchored to an absent audience and cannot be defused in solitude.
- Empirical-adjacent grounding: Crocker and Wolfe on contingencies of self-worth, which separates approval-of-others contingency from competence and competition contingency; Curran and Hill on rising perfectionism, which distinguishes socially prescribed perfectionism from self-oriented perfectionism.

What would make us revise this
Weakens if approval-contingent people ease their guilt after solitary ungraded rest as well as after witnessed rest, if the discriminating question does not predict who is helped, or if the witness step only relocates approval dependence without ever transferring to solitary rest.

Is this a public Teaching?
No. This is a teaching candidate kept as research trail. The public Teachings page carries the smaller distilled set.
