Teaching / weakened
When you stop owning the path, keep what can correct you.
Self-negation is safer when surrender does not remove care, correction, ordinary duty, or trustworthy belonging.
The Teaching
A person can release ownership without becoming unreachable. If a teaching asks you to loosen the self, ask what will still correct your mistakes and return you to care. It may be a teacher, a friend, a group, a text, a daily form, a promise, the body, a therapist, or an ordinary duty. Do not turn surrender into a private test of worth.
Human problem
What this is for
Loneliness, burnout, and achievement-contingent self-worth intensified by private spiritual self-management.
Modern human condition sourcesFor
Who may need it
Stable but isolated meditators, perfectionistic seekers, achievement-driven professionals, app-based practitioners, and self-improvers who turn even surrender into something they must perform correctly.
Pressure survived
Why it stands for now
Survives by narrowing the active frontier: it does not claim a universal remainder after self-negation. It only says that public teaching needs a care and correction check when private ownership is loosened.

Tests
Care Holder Pilot
For stable over-managers, the Care Holder Check will reduce private spiritual striving and increase one concrete support action within two weeks. If it increases rumination, dependency confusion, or avoidance, the practice should be weakened or retired.
Next: Run a small screened journaling pilot with pre and post ratings for striving, shame, reachability, loneliness, support contact, and ordinary responsibility return.
Support Loss Failure Clusters
In spiritual practice, therapy-adjacent coaching, and workplace burnout settings, messages that reduce personal ownership without naming team, boundary, clinician, community, or duty support will produce more private burden or drift. If release language works equally well without care placement, the cross-domain claim is weakened.
Next: Compare practitioner interviews, coaching materials, and burnout interventions for whether named care and correction channels predict safer return to ordinary action.

Source Basis
- Mode: Critique; active frontier: Remainder pressure after self-negation.
- Primary-text comparison: Huangbo's Transmission of Mind rejects seeking mind with mind, Dogen's Bendowa and Soto practice-realization sources refuse a clean split between practice and result, Shinran's Other Power letters and Tannisho place decisive agency outside self-powered calculation, and Dzogchen direct-introduction sources strain any simple path sequence. - Practitioner-method lens: Huangbo-style search refusal, used to catch the hidden assumption that every self-negating path has a seeker, a crossing, and an after. Critique of the method: search refusal can overcut needed social care, so it must be paired with safety analysis and falsification.

What would make us revise this
Weaken this teaching if practitioner reports show that naming care holders increases dependency, shame, self-monitoring, or unsafe authority compliance, or if mature lineages safely teach self-negation without any explicit or implicit care holder.
