A claim that can explain every outcome may comfort a person, but it should not guide a decision until it names what would look different if it were false.

The Teaching

Some sentences help because they steady the heart. That is real help. But a sentence that fits every outcome cannot tell you what this moment asks.

When you are lonely, burned out, or trying not to make life a verdict on your worth, do not let a total answer replace a concrete check. Ask what would be different if the support were really there. Ask what would be different if it were missing.

If nothing could count against the sentence, receive it as comfort. Then look for the plain next fact: who can you call, what duty needs care, what help is actually available, and what should wait until you are safer?

Compass Check Diary Trial

For the target cohort, three uses of The Compass Check should increase concrete contact, rest, repair, or help-seeking without increasing rumination. If it mainly creates doubt-checking or performs no better than a simple outreach prompt, the practice is weakened.

Next: Run a screened two-week self-report trial excluding acute crisis, OCD, scrupulosity, severe depression, dissociation, and unsafe authority contexts.

Catch-All Explanation Comparison

In workplace burnout, recovery, and therapy-adjacent settings, broad reassurance should guide better decisions only when paired with observable differences and concrete supports. If total explanations without prohibited observations guide decisions equally well, the teaching is weakened.
