When the self loosens, notice the rush to belong somewhere new.

After ordinary self-reference loosens, do not assume you must find a new place to put your attention. Some paths build a home and some teach homelessness. The hurry to re-house loosened attention is often the old self looking for a new address.

Return To Care

The Teaching

Something quiets. The usual sense of being someone thins out. Then a question arrives fast: where do I belong now? You reach for a new identity, a teacher to follow, a doctrine to hold, or the quiet pride of being awakened. Slow down. The reaching may be the very thing you thought had loosened. Ask what your path actually asks of you. Some paths give attention a home and tell you to rest there. Some teach you to stop looking for a place to land at all. Do not borrow one while needing the other. If you are shaken, frightened, or floating, this is not the time for homelessness; return to your body, your duties, and the people who can reach you.

Human problem

What this is for

Anxious rehoming of attention after self-loosening: turning a quiet or open state into a new identity, a new authority to belong to, or proof of spiritual attainment, especially where self-worth is tied to achievement and visibility.

Modern human condition sources

For

Who may need it

People practicing alone, people mixing teachings from several sources, app meditators, and retreat or psychedelic returners who have loosened ordinary self-reference and feel pressure to claim where they now belong.

Pressure survived

Why it stands for now

Survived the primary-text contrast that separates affirming a quality of awareness from permitting a resting place, and survived the modern pull to convert any open state into an identity. It is narrowed: it does not claim non-abiding is universal medicine.

Rehoming Check Pilot

For screened stable returners, three uses of the Rehoming Check should reduce identity-claiming and status posting after quiet states and increase ordinary contact, without increasing unreality or floating. If it increases dissociation, fear, avoidance of grounding, or performs no better than rest and one trusted conversation, the practice is weakened or retired.

Next: Run a small screened diary pilot with grounding-first exclusions, comparing against ordinary rest, one trusted conversation, and a grounding-only prompt.

Evidence Trail

Source Basis

  • Mode: Critique. The active frontier asks where freed attention may rest. This run weakens the custody framing by showing that its first question, to whom does attention belong, is malformed for non-abiding traditions.
  • Primary-text comparison: Udana 1.10 (Bahiya Sutta) removes the person from the sense fields without affirming any positive quality or resting place; Brihadaranyaka Upanishad 3.7.23 affirms a positive unseen knower and makes it the Self, a resting place held as identity; Tilopa's Ganges Mahamudra instructions affirm a positive luminous self-knowing while saying mind has no support and does not abide, and require the guru; Pseudo-Dionysius, Mystical Theology, places the divine Cause beyond both affirmation and negation, refusing the resting question itself.
  • Practitioner-method lens: Mahamudra non-abiding recognition, used as a reasoning lens by withholding the assumption that loosened attention must be re-housed. Critique of the lens: non-abiding language can make ordinary grounding, contact, and duty look like grasping, so it was corrected by Bahiya-style subtraction and by trauma-informed grounding for destabilized states.
  • Divergence from Codex, Rest Where Correction Can Reach (2026-06-04), which narrowed the same anomaly to correction-reachability. This record instead narrows it to a prior question: does the path permit attention to belong anywhere at all.
  • Near-neighbor pressure: apratisthita and non-abiding teachings in the Heart Sutra and Diamond Sutra; the custody model of unclaimed attention; modern human-condition source on achievement-contingent self-worth and digital comparison.

What would make us revise this

Weakens if the felt urge to rehome attention cannot be distinguished from ordinary craving, if non-abiding instruction is safe only because of teacher presence rather than any property of attention, or if the teaching increases floating, unreality, or avoidance of grounding and duty.
