Teaching / revised

Before you say two teachings agree, ask how far apart any two teachings usually sit.

A resemblance between teachings is evidence only when the two are closer to each other than to a teaching no one thinks belongs.

The Teaching

When two teachings sound alike, the feeling of recognition is strong and quick. But almost any two deep teachings will share something once you describe them loosely enough. Before you trust a match, set a third teaching beside them, one you do not think belongs. If the first two are not clearly closer to each other than to the stranger, the likeness was in your wording, not in the teachings. Real agreement survives that test. A flattering agreement dissolves the moment you measure it against an ordinary gap.

Human problem

What this is for

Digital comparison, meaning loss, and false belonging built on the comforting claim that all paths secretly say the same thing.

Modern human condition sources

For

Who may need it

Spiritually eclectic readers, interfaith teachers, and public writers who collect cross-tradition quotations and feel reassured or authorized by apparent universal agreement.

Pressure survived

Why it stands for now

Survived the primary-text test where Chandogya tat tvam asi and SN 22.59 both look close to an unrelated Confucian self-restraint teaching at coarse grain, and survived comparison-method prior art by adding a measured baseline rather than only a rule that comparison can confirm.

Does the Baseline Change Verdicts

For stable eclectic readers, Set a Stranger Beside the Pair should reduce confident all-paths-agree claims and increase precise narrow agreements, without increasing cynicism or withdrawal. If verdicts match ordinary careful reading or if isolation rises, the practice and the critique both weaken.

Next: Run a small two-week trial with screened readers, comparing the stranger step against ordinary careful reading and a wait-before-posting prompt; track confident-agreement claims, narrow agreements, curiosity, cynicism, and real conversation.

Evidence Trail

Source Basis

  • Run mode: Critique. Active frontier: translation strain as a test of convergence. This record weakens the frontier by showing that a strain score has no meaning without a comparison class.
  • Thinking-method source: Madhyamaka catuskoti discipline (Nagarjuna, MMK), used as a lens that refuses to assert a relation until its alternatives are examined; I applied it by refusing to count a same as evidence until difference, ordinary difference, and no-relation were scored too. Critique of the lens: catuskoti can dissolve every positive pattern into emptiness, so it was paired with the scientific discipline of a control or comparison group, which insists a signal be measured against a baseline rather than negated.
  • Primary-text comparison: Chandogya Upanishad 6.8.7 (tat tvam asi), SN 22.59 Anattalakkhana Sutta (the five aggregates as not-self), and Analects 12.1 (restrain the self and return to ritual). At coarse grain all three share loosening of the surface self, so the famous Atman and anatta closeness is not visibly closer to each other than to an unrelated Confucian teaching until a finer grain and a baseline are introduced. The comparison reveals that apparent agreement can be an artifact of description level, not a property of the teachings.
  • Near prior art: Jonathan Z. Smith, In Comparison a Magic Dwells, https://classics.osu.edu/sites/classics.osu.edu/files/Magic_Dwells.pdf; Oliver Freiberger, Elements of a Comparative Methodology, https://www.mdpi.com/2077-1444/9/2/38. These warn against projected similarity but do not require a measured baseline of ordinary difference.
  • Cross-domain prior art: base-rate reasoning and signal detection theory, which hold that a match score is meaningless without a comparison distribution and a false-alarm rate.
  • Internal near-neighbor pressure: A Test Must Be Able to Say Yes; A Shared Word Is Not Two Witnesses; First Ask If a Path Agrees With Itself; A Yes Must Find Its Holder. This record adds the calibration step those records assume but never define.
  • Modern human-condition grounding: U.S. Surgeon General social connection advisory (loneliness, false belonging), https://www.hhs.gov/sites/default/files/surgeon-general-social-connection-advisory.pdf; Pew, Where Americans Find Meaning in Life; U.S. Surgeon General youth mental health and social media advisory (digital comparison).

What would make us revise this

Weakens if trustworthy comparers cannot agree on a usable stranger set, if baseline-checked verdicts never differ from ordinary careful reading, or if the teaching mainly breeds suspicion of every comforting source rather than honest discernment.
