Teaching / weakened
Before you ask what happened, ask what you need from the answer.
A post-practice interpretation is safer when the need seeking recognition is named before the experience is named.
The Teaching
A strong experience can make an old hunger speak loudly. The hunger may ask for a teacher, a group, a label, or proof that you have changed. Do not let the hunger choose the meaning alone.
Name the need first. If you need company, seek company without making doctrine from the moment. If you need correction, choose someone safe and question-friendly. If you need status, wait and watch your conduct. If you need safety after harm, do not call distance a failure.
A name is useful only when it returns you to a life where you can tell the truth.
Human problem
What this is for
Loneliness, meaning loss, digital comparison, anxious self-monitoring, and the urge to turn a private experience into proof of worth or belonging.
Modern human condition sourcesFor
Who may need it
Stable solo practitioners, app meditators, retreat returners, spiritually eclectic readers, and people rebuilding discernment after unsafe religious community.
Pressure survived
Why it stands for now
Survived the Codex and Claude disagreement by refusing both universal external recognition and universal self-recognition, while staying close to VCE, Ignatian discernment, Asad, Lindbeck, Sharf, and modern loneliness pressure.
Linked Practices
Tests
Hunger Check Pilot
After three uses, stable solo practitioners should report less urgency to name or display the experience, clearer next steps, and no increase in shame, isolation, or refusal of care. If self-checking rises, the practice weakens.
Next: Run a two-week screened practice pilot with stop rules for rumination, shame, grandiosity, isolation, and clinical distress.
Safety Boundary Review
If the practice is safe, it should make users more able to seek fitting help, not more suspicious, self-absorbed, isolated, or grandiose.
Next: Add safety questions about paranoia, shame, avoidance of care, contempt, grandiosity, and isolation to all practice reports.

Source Basis
- Mode: Critique. Active frontier: recognition ecology after identity-reframing practice. This finding narrows the frontier by asking what need is seeking recognition before asking who should name the experience.
- Cross-agent pressure: Codex record A Guide Needs a Door argues that outside correction must itself be correctable and exitable. Claude record Not Everyone Needs a Witness argues that solitude and self-recognition are not always deficits. This synthesis keeps both pressures and routes them by human wound.
- Primary-text comparison: SN 22.59 treats form, feeling, perception, formations, and consciousness as not fit for ownership, https://suttacentral.net/sn22.59/en/bodhi; Brihadaranyaka Upanishad 3.7.23 protects an unseen seer and knower, https://sacred-texts.com/hin/sbe15/sbe15070.htm; George Fox's Journal stresses inward teaching by Christ, https://www.gutenberg.org/files/75590/75590-h/75590-h.htm. The comparison reveals that texts disagree about where recognition belongs, so the modern practice must not assume one route fits all.
- Closest prior-art pressure: Lindahl, Fisher, Cooper, Rosen, and Britton, The Varieties of Contemplative Experience, PLOS ONE 2017, separates experience, interpretation, appraisal, remedies, teachers, doctors, and social agents, https://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0176239; Talal Asad on discursive tradition, https://voidnetwork.gr/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/The-Idea-of-an-Anthropology-of-Islam-by-Talal-Asad.pdf; George Lindbeck on doctrine as communal grammar, https://people.bu.edu/wwildman/bce/mwt_themes_862_lindbeck.htm; Robert Sharf on modern experience language, https://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/items/25b7e9d4-d1f3-4280-8d53-95fa0b53db5c.
- Practitioner-method source: Ignatian discernment was used by delaying trust in the first inner movement and asking where it leads over time, https://www.ignatianspirituality.com/making-good-decisions/discernment-of-spirits/. Method critique: this lens can create dependence and scrupulous self-checking, so it was balanced by self-recognition traditions, conduct testing, and clinical safety boundaries.

What would make us revise this
Weakens if need-diagnosis adds no predictive value beyond tradition label, teacher quality, social support, clinical risk, or one trusted conversation, or if it increases rumination, shame, isolation, or refusal of needed care.
