When you keep finding a better word for the same problem, ask what test you are avoiding.
A finer description of a problem is not new understanding unless something outside your own description could show it is wrong, and unless it changes what you would do.
The Teaching
You can describe a problem again and again, each time more precisely, and feel that you are getting somewhere. Sometimes you are. But notice when the new words change nothing you would actually do. A better name can be a quiet way to stay where you are: it feels like work, it gives you something to show, and it never risks being wrong. Understanding earns its name when it meets something it does not control. Ask the person. Take the small action. Watch the result for a few days. If the finer description leads to no test and no different step, set the writing down and let life answer instead.
Human problem
What this is for
Rumination and self-analysis used as avoidance, and achievement-contingent self-worth that treats producing more insight as the proof of progress.
Modern human condition sourcesFor
Who may need it
Reflective high-achievers, heavy journalers, and people fluent in therapy or practice language who reformulate a recurring problem instead of acting on it or letting anyone test it.
Pressure survived
Why it stands for now
Survives rumination research showing perceived insight without benefit and abstract processing linked to avoidance; survives internal near-duplicate pressure by narrowing to a decision-divergence test rather than another correction metaphor; survives cultural-evolution caution by freezing only new vocabulary, not inquiry.

Tests
One Description One Test Pilot
Screened over-reflective journalers using One Description One Test will report fewer repeated reformulations and more concrete actions within 48 hours than a free-journaling control, without increased shame or compulsive checking. If the reformulation-only control does as well, the practice weakens.
Next: Run a small screened diary pilot with hard exclusions for crisis, OCD or scrupulosity, severe depression, dissociation, mania, and psychosis.

Source Basis
- Mode: Critique. Frontier: what a method does with its own authority, and where freed attention is allowed to rest. This record does not add a new correction metaphor. It argues that the recent post-insight correction cluster is largely one finding under many names, and should be frozen and tested rather than extended.
- Internal near-neighbor cluster, Codex, 2026-06-23: The Guard Must Bite And Release; The Check Must Not Belong To You; Some Checks Need Another Person; No One Should Hold Every Role; Set Down The Tool, Keep Correction; The Carrier-Holder Gate. These six share nearly the same source basis (MN 22, Heart Sutra, Sells on unsaying, Smith on Nagarjuna and Wittgenstein, Lindahl et al. VCE, Surgeon General advisory), the same cohort (lonely self-guided practitioners), the same practice shape (a short post-insight check), and the same unrun falsification test (blind coding of whether the method-authority variable beats ordinary support controls).
- Existing core teachings this advances rather than replaces: A Distinction Is Not A Discovery; Stop Renaming The Answer And Run The Test; Keep What Can Correct You.
- Practitioner-method lens: neti-neti negation applied reflexively to the cluster's own vocabulary. Subtract the metaphor (guard, court, role, home, carrier) and ask what case decision remains. Critique of the lens: neti-neti can over-subtract and erase genuine refinement, so it is paired with cultural-evolution fidelity-and-variance discipline, which warns against killing variants before a discriminating test exists.
- Rumination research as empirical-adjacent grounding: Nolen-Hoeksema, Wisco, and Lyubomirsky, Rethinking Rumination, Perspectives on Psychological Science 2008 (people perceive insight from rumination, but the perceived insight does not translate into benefit, and rumination is reinforced by its avoidant relief); Watkins and others on abstract-analytical versus concrete-experiential processing mode; experiential-avoidance accounts of depressive rumination. These support the claim that finer abstract reformulation can feel like insight while functioning as avoidance of the concrete test.
- Modern human-condition grounding: modern-human-condition-who-world-mental-health-report and modern-human-condition-apa-stress-in-america-2024 for rumination, anxiety, and achievement-contingent self-worth. What would make us revise this
Weakens if reformulation alone, without action or any external check, reliably improves understanding or outcomes; if the named cluster records produce clearly divergent case verdicts under blind review; or if the teaching increases shame or discourages the reflection a person actually needs before acting.

Is this a public Teaching?
No. This is a teaching candidate kept as research trail. The public Teachings page carries the smaller distilled set.
