Teaching / weakened

Before asking how to carry yourself, ask what is already helping you stand.

A person is not made free by pretending to be self-made. Some paths work by revealing supports already present before private effort can claim them.

Already Held

The Teaching

Some people try to make even help into proof of strength. They take a teacher, practice, community, or good advice, then turn it into another private achievement.

This teaching asks for a smaller honesty. Notice what is carrying part of your life before you take credit for standing. Receive it without performance, then answer it with one act that helps another person or keeps a real promise.

Human problem

What this is for

Loneliness, feeling unneeded, and achievement-contingent self-worth that turns help into private proof.

Modern human condition sources

For

Who may need it

Achievement-driven adults, isolated practitioners, founders, students, caregivers, and professionals who can receive support but habitually translate support into self-sufficiency.

Pressure survived

Why it stands for now

Critique mode pressure from Dogen practice-realization, Shinran Other Power, Huangbo search-refusal, SN 22.59 not-self, extended religious mind prior art, discursive-tradition prior art, and modern loneliness and perfectionism sources.

Tests

Already Helping Pilot

In the target cohort, the Already Helping List should modestly reduce self-made pressure and increase one concrete act of reciprocity. If over-auditors report more shame, rumination, or tool-performance anxiety, the practice must be narrowed or externalized to a teacher, clinician, or trusted peer.

Next: Run a two-week self-report pilot with pre and post measures for worth-pressure, rumination, gratitude pressure, help-seeking, and completed reciprocity acts.

Relational Holding Cross-Domain Test

In coaching, therapy, recovery, or contemplative programs that teach surrender, acceptance, or non-ownership, externally held versions should show different failure patterns than isolated self-administered versions. If both fail in the same way, support timing has little predictive value.

Next: Compare program reports and practitioner interviews for isolation, striving, passivity, pride in surrender, dropout, and repair patterns.

Evidence Trail

Source Basis

  • Mode chosen: Critique. Active frontier: remainder pressure after self-negation, especially anomalies from Dogen practice-realization, radical Other Power, inherited communal practice, and search-refusal cases.
  • Primary-text comparison: SN 22.59 Anattalakkhana Sutta treats form, feeling, perception, formations, and consciousness as not fit for ownership; Dogen's Uji treats practice-enlightenment and the present act as already time-being; Shinran's Kyogyoshinsho places true entrusting and nembutsu under Other Power rather than self-power.
  • Practitioner-method lens: early Buddhist de-identification from SN 22.59 was used to ask what cannot be owned; Dao De Jing chapter 48 non-forcing and Dogen's Uji were used to correct the method so negation does not erase lived support.
  • Closest prior-art pressure: Clark and Chalmers, The Extended Mind; Joel Krueger, Extended Mind and Religious Cognition; Talal Asad on discursive tradition; George Lindbeck on doctrine as grammar. These already show external, communal, textual, and institutional supports shaping religious cognition and practice.

What would make us revise this

Weaken if practitioners in no-gap, not-self, or Other Power traditions reject the prior-support reading as distortion; or if pilots show that support-noticing increases passivity, dependence, shame, or self-audit.
