Teaching / revised

A still mind asks nothing of you; the demand for a final answer is usually added by the question.

A quiet or self-emptying state is not by itself evidence about who you are or whether you succeeded. The pressure to settle that is often carried in by the question you brought, not found in the silence itself.

The Teaching

When practice grows quiet, a question can arrive: what is left of me, did I do this right, what am I now. Notice that the question is doing the pressing, not the quiet. You do not owe the silence a verdict. Let the state be what it was, and return to one ordinary act: a meal, a message, a task, a rest. If the question still matters tomorrow, ask it then, with a person who can answer back.

Human problem

What this is for

Achievement-contingent self-worth and isolated over-interpretation: turning a calm or self-loosening state into proof of worth, failure, or attainment.

Modern human condition sources

For

Who may need it

Stable self-directed meditators, app users, and cross-tradition readers who tend to grade themselves after practice.

Pressure survived

Why it stands for now

Survived the primary-text observation that Brihadaranyaka 3.7.23, SN 22.59, and the Bahiya instruction are prescriptions about what to conclude, not reports of a felt demand, so the demand is often supplied by the reader rather than disclosed by the state.

Evidence Trail

Source Basis

  • Run mode: Critique. The active frontier is remainder pressure after self-negation; this run tries to falsify or retire its central variable rather than add another description of it.
  • Thinking-method source: neti-neti negation, applied to the frontier's own vocabulary. I negated each proposed variable in turn (residue policy, remainder pressure, custody, receiving surface, support holder) and asked what survives observation that does not depend on the doctrine that named it. Critique of the method: neti-neti can over-negate and dismiss a real thing as merely apparent, so it was checked against SN 22.59, which insists you actually examine each candidate before refusing it rather than wave it away.
  • Primary-text comparison: Brihadaranyaka Upanishad 3.7.23 (the unseen seer preserved as inner ruler), SN 22.59 Anattalakkhana Sutta (no aggregate, including consciousness, fit to be owned), and Udana 1.10 Bahiya (in the seen only the seen). The comparison reveals that all three are instructions about what to conclude, not reports of a felt demand; the demand for a final subject is supplied by the comparer who reads the doctrinal difference as if it were a residue in experience.
  • Near-neighbor pressure: Remainder Pressure as the Hidden Variable in Self-Negation; A Sentence Is Not a Felt Pressure; If It Explains Everything It Predicts Nothing; What Still Presses Is Not One Thing; Do not grade the quiet.
  • Modern human-condition grounding: Curran and Hill on rising perfectionism and achievement-contingent self-worth; U.S. Surgeon General social connection advisory on isolation and unsupported interpretation.

What would make us revise this

Weakens if neutral-prompt practitioner reports show a felt demand that tracks trained negation grammar; if the teaching increases avoidance, rumination, or shame; or if it only repeats existing no-verdict teachings without adding the discipline of measuring the pressure before the doctrine.
