When you keep sharpening the question, ask what you are afraid to test.

An inquiry can grow more precise while standing still. Precision is not a finished test, and the sign of real movement is one commitment you let reality correct, not a finer distinction.

The Teaching

It feels like progress to see the question more clearly each time. But a clearer question is not a finished one. You can name a tenth distinction and still not know whether any of them is true. Watch for the same hard case coming back wearing a new name; that is the sign you are decorating the question, not answering it. Stop adding. Take one version, name the result that would show you were wrong, arrange for someone or something to deliver that result honestly, and let it land. If you cannot say what would change your mind, you are not thinking yet; you are collecting.

Human problem

What this is for

Achievement-contingent self-worth and analysis used as avoidance: the relief of refining a plan, explanation, or understanding instead of committing to one action that could be corrected. It also fits the reflective seeker who gathers teachings rather than staying with one long enough to be changed.

Modern human condition sources

For

Who may need it

Planners, analysts, founders, perfectionistic professionals, researchers, and reflective seekers who experience producing more analysis or more frameworks as if it were progress.

Pressure survived

Why it stands for now

Survived prior-art pressure from the jingle-jangle fallacy, Lakatos on degenerating programmes, Trungpa's spiritual supermarket, Benedict's stabilitas, and Abba Moses on staying in the cell. Survived an empirical check: the underlying signature (precision advancing while no forward test is completed, and the same counterexamples recurring) is directly verifiable, not rhetorical.

The One You Would Bet On, two-week trial

For over-refiners with a securable corrector, three uses should produce at least one completed, corrected action and lower the urge to add more distinctions, without raising anxiety. If it forces premature closure, raises shame, or works no better than ordinary prioritization, the practice is weakened. For unsupervised solo practitioners with no corrector, it should show more premature-closure harm, confirming the corrector caveat.

Next: Run a small screened trial that separates participants by whether a real corrector is available, and compare against an ordinary prioritization prompt.

Evidence Trail

Source Basis

  • Run mode: Critique. The active frontier (remainder pressure after self-negation) is saturated, so this run weakens and narrows rather than invents.
  • Thinking-method source: Apophthegmata Patrum, Abba Moses 6, 'Go, sit in your cell, and your cell will teach you everything' (trans. Benedicta Ward). I used staying-with-one as the lens: do not wander to a finer distinction; stay until the one you have corrects you. Critique of the lens: the cell can also entrench error when no corrector is present, so I checked it against the cluster's own warnings about premature commitment.
  • Adversarial verification workflow (4 prior-art lanes plus distinct-content and anomaly checks).
  • Jingle-jangle fallacy and construct proliferation: Thorndike 1904; Kelley 1927; Block 1995 (Psychological Bulletin 117:187-215); Marsh et al. 2019 (self-concept vs self-efficacy); Anvari et al. 2025 (A Fragmented Field).
  • Lakatos 1970, progressive vs degenerating problemshift; Popper 1959/1963 on ad hoc, immunizing auxiliary hypotheses. The cluster's repeated re-absorption of the same anomalies without a corroborated novel prediction matches degeneration.
  • Trungpa, Cutting Through Spiritual Materialism (1973) and The Myth of Freedom (1976): the spiritual supermarket; swallow one teaching rather than collect. Welwood, spiritual bypassing (1984/2000). Krishnamurti: seeking as window-shopping.
  • Benedict, Rule ch. 1 (gyrovagues) and ch. 58 (stabilitas); Ramakrishna's well image (Gospel of Sri Ramakrishna; Mission retelling). Rumi's 'hundred ways to kneel' dropped as contrary; Kabir attribution too weak to cite.
  • In-corpus near-duplicates this finding must merge with, not displace: 'Restating Is Not Realizing', 'More Is Not The Same As Progress', 'If It Explains Everything, It Predicts Nothing'.
  • Verifiable test ledger for this frontier: of the registered tests, zero forward-looking predictive tests (split-source coding, blind coding, practitioner trials) are complete; the completed ones are prior-art and novelty audits; hundreds remain pending; the frontier was re-selected about eleven times in two days, each minting a finding. The same four cases (Dogen practice-realization, Huangbo search-refusal, Dzogchen direct recognition, radical Other Power and Shinran) recur unchanged as fresh anomalies.

What would make us revise this

Weakens if refining a question without testing reliably produces breakthroughs, or if naming a killing result mostly forces premature closure on questions that genuinely need more information. The teaching is not just commit: premature commitment without a secured corrector harms the unsupported person, so the teaching collapses if it is read as a push to commit rather than a push to arrange correction. It also weakens if the distinctions it calls redundant turn out, when finally tested, to predict distinct failures.
