Teaching / revised

Let go of a method only if you believed you held it.

Advice to set down a practice and disown its result is medicine for people who think effort earns the result and who price their worth by it. It is not a universal rule for how practice ends.

The Teaching

Some people grip a method as if their grip guaranteed the outcome, then read a good outcome as proof of a good self and a bad one as proof of a bad self. For them the counsel is exact: loosen the grip, and let the result be a result, not a verdict on you. But if you never believed the work was yours to own, there is nothing here to release; the instruction will either do nothing or hand you back the very self it told you to drop. Ask first whether you have been earning. If you have, this is for you. If you have not, leave it; your work is a different one.

Human problem

What this is for

Achievement-contingent self-worth and burnout, the habit of converting every result into a measure of personal value.

Modern human condition sources

For

Who may need it

High-striving, outcome-internalizing people in competitive, individualized settings: perfectionistic students, founders, professionals, performers, and caregivers who treat results as proof of worth.

Pressure survived

Why it stands for now

Survived an originality audit showing the underlying release-the-method structure is standard (raft, upaya, ladder) and survived three primary-text anomalies (Dogen, Shinran, Heart Sutra) by being restated as cohort-specific advice rather than a universal law.

Cohort split on the release teaching

If the cohort boundary is real, self-power, outcome-internalizing achievers should report relief and reduced self-rating after using the release teaching, while other-power or non-dual practitioners should report redundancy, confusion, or a reinstalled controlling self. If both groups respond the same, the cohort boundary collapses and the teaching should revert to a universal claim or be retired.

Next: Collect short before-and-after reports from two groups: self-identified perfectionistic achievers and practitioners trained in grace-centered or non-dual paths, excluding acute clinical cases.

Source Basis

  • Mode chosen: Critique mode with originality-audit pressure; the frontier's required action was complete_audit, and two recent findings (Holding Without Owning, ee1d8862; The Test Is How You Return, a61b6a95) sit unaudited on the same claim.
  • Thinking method source: the raft simile of MN 22 Alagaddupama Sutta (Thanissaro trans., accesstoinsight.org) used as a disciplined non-attachment lens: hold the model only long enough to test it, then watch whether grasping it as a discovery creates distortion. Critique of the lens: raft-thinking biases toward release and can make any retained structure look like clinging, so it was checked against Dogen's practice-realization, which refuses the release/retain frame entirely.
  • Prior-art audit (web-verified): Joshua William Smith, Snakes and Ladders: Therapy as Liberation in Nagarjuna and Wittgenstein's Tractatus, Sophia 60.2 (2021), 411-430, https://doi.org/10.1007/s11841-020-00804-6: the validate/undermine and retain/abandon distinctions are already deployed for the exact Nagarjuna-plus-Tractatus pairing the audited model names; only the orthogonal grid is not built.
  • Prior-art audit: Michael A. Sells, Mystical Languages of Unsaying (Chicago, 1994): the self-undermining 'meaning event' is already a cross-tradition discovery across Plotinus, Eriugena, Ibn Arabi, Porete, Eckhart; custody appears only obliquely as dispossession.
  • Prior-art audit: G. Victor Sogen Hori, Koan and Kensho in the Rinzai Zen Curriculum, in Heine and Wright eds., The Koan (Oxford, 2000): the Five Ranks already supply a graded typology of how realization is held, culminating in embodiment with no trace and no display; Sharf (Numen 1995) and Katz supply the self-validation critique.
  • Prior-art audit: the Eckhart Gelassenheit / Heidegger releasement / Dzogchen rang grol cluster already attests all three custody poles (retain, abandon, embody-without-ownership).
  • Primary-text anomaly close readings: Dogen, Bendowa and Genjokoan (shusho-itto, shinjin datsuraku, firewood-and-ash, ju-hoi) and Uji (nikon, kyoryaku); Shinran, Tannisho ch. 1, 8, 9 (sesshu fusha, hi-gyo hi-zen, waga hakarai) and the jinen honi passage of the Mattosho; Heart Sutra (na praptir na-apraptih set beside apraptitvad prajnaparamitam asritya, Conze trans.).
  • Modern human-condition grounding: Curran and Hill (2019), Perfectionism Is Increasing Over Time, Psychological Bulletin 145(4): 410-429; corroborated by WHO burnout-as-occupational-phenomenon, Gallup State of the Global Workplace 2024, APA Stress in America 2024.

Disclosure

What would make us revise this

Weakens if self-power achievers and other-power or non-dual practitioners report the same effect from the teaching, which would mean the cohort boundary is fictional. Also weakens if the advice mainly licenses avoidance or lateness rather than reducing the conversion of results into self-worth.
