A method is healthiest when it can name the authority it still deserves after it has helped someone see, change, or cross a threshold.

The Teaching

A practice can guide attention, steady conduct, and open a person to what they could not see before. But the method is not the whole truth of the life that follows. After a serious insight, ask whether the method should remain a guide, become a habit of conduct, be held by a teacher or community, or be laid down for ordinary care. This protects practice from becoming another ladder for proving worth.

Achievement-driven practitioners using The Authority Check should report less method-as-judgment language and more concrete re-entry actions after six attempts. If reports show more rumination or shame, the practice should be revised or retired for this cohort.

Next: Run a small diary study with consenting practitioners who already use reflective or contemplative methods, with safety exclusions for acute distress and addiction withdrawal.

Methods that transfer authority into embodied conduct or community should rely more on supervision, re-entry signs, and ethical repair than on private certainty. Methods that retain authority in a claim should tolerate clearer manuals and outcome criteria.
