Teaching / under dialogue

Use a method fully, then ask what should carry authority next.

A method is healthiest when it can name the authority it still deserves after it has helped someone see, change, or cross a threshold.

Set Down

The Teaching

A practice can guide attention, steady conduct, and open a person to what they could not see before. But the method is not the whole truth of the life that follows. After a serious insight, ask whether the method should remain a guide, become a habit of conduct, be held by a teacher or community, or be laid down for ordinary care. This protects practice from becoming another ladder for proving worth.

Human problem

What this is for

Achievement-contingent self-worth and burnout, especially the habit of turning every tool into a test of adequacy.

Modern human condition sources

For

Who may need it

Perfectionistic students, founders, professionals, caregivers, leaders, and serious practitioners who turn methods of growth into systems of self-measurement.

Pressure survived

Why it stands for now

Survived critique from MN 22's validated-then-abandoned raft, Heart Sutra's no-attainment-with-practice hybrid, and near-neighbor pressure from therapeutic readings of Nagarjuna and Wittgenstein. It was narrowed from a broad method-completion typology into a custody test.

Achievement Practitioner Report

Achievement-driven practitioners using The Authority Check should report less method-as-judgment language and more concrete re-entry actions after six attempts. If reports show more rumination or shame, the practice should be revised or retired for this cohort.

Next: Run a small diary study with consenting practitioners who already use reflective or contemplative methods, with safety exclusions for acute distress and addiction withdrawal.

Verification Architecture Prediction

Methods that transfer authority into embodied conduct or community should rely more on supervision, re-entry signs, and ethical repair than on private certainty. Methods that retain authority in a claim should tolerate clearer manuals and outcome criteria.

Next: Compare Advaita inquiry manuals, Zen post-kensho training accounts, Pure Land pastoral texts, and workplace behavior-change protocols for their verification architecture.

Evidence Trail

Source Basis

  • Mode: Critique.
  • Frontier brief: What a method does with its own authority.
  • Practitioner-method source: MN 22 Alagaddupama Sutta raft simile, used as a lens for proper use and release of method.
  • Primary-text comparison: MN 22's raft simile validates the Dhamma as a crossing tool and then warns against carrying it; the Heart Sutra denies attainment while still relying on Prajnaparamita practice; Mandukya Upanishad treats waking, dreaming, and deep sleep as evidence for turiya; Tannisho strains the model by grounding release in Other Power rather than self-authorizing insight.
  • Near-neighbor pressure: Joshua William Smith, Snakes and Ladders: Therapy as Liberation in Nagarjuna and Wittgenstein's Tractatus, Sophia 2021; Michael A. Sells, Mystical Languages of Unsaying; Buddhist raft language in MN 22.
  • Modern human-condition grounding: docs/modern-human-condition.md; modern-human-condition-who-burn-out-occupational-phenomenon; modern-human-condition-apa-stress-in-america-2024; modern-human-condition-curran-hill-perfectionism-increasing. Modern Human Condition: Burn-out as an Occupational Phenomenon Modern Human Condition: Perfectionism Is Increasing Over Time Modern Human Condition: Stress in America 2024
  • Reasoning-method critique: raft reasoning prevents attachment to method, but can distort traditions where faithful repetition, embodiment, communal custody, or grace remain central after insight. It must be balanced with close textual comparison and falsification pressure.

What would make us revise this

Weaken if primary texts and practitioner reports show that post-insight authority is not distinguishable from tradition membership, or if achievement-driven practitioners are not especially prone to making methods into self-worth tests.
