Not every contemplative quiet is meant to settle into a place. Some practices give attention a home; some teach it to stop needing one. Confusing the two turns a healthy openness into a failed search for ground.
The Teaching
When practice grows quiet, the mind often asks where it should now rest: in awareness, in the self, in God, in nothing. Notice that this hides two questions. One is whether you are meant to settle at all. The other is what you are meant to settle into. Some paths answer the second and tell you where to rest. Some paths answer the first and tell you not to build a resting place yet. If your practice asks you to stay open, do not treat the missing resting place as a failure. Let the quiet stay unplaced, then return to one ordinary act of care.

Screened stable practitioners using the practice after quiet sessions should report less self-grading about lacking a resting place and steadier return to ordinary care, without increased unreality or floating. If unreality, fear, or self-monitoring rises, the practice should be revised or retired.
