Teaching candidate / under dialogue
When you ask where it left you, you have already handed yourself a place.
A question that asks where attention or the self has landed presupposes a location, so it cannot register an experience that had none; the demand to locate is often what turns a quiet moment into a verdict about yourself.
The Teaching
After something loosens, the mind asks quickly: where am I now, what did I become, where did that leave me. Notice the shape of the question before you answer it. It asks for a place. If the quiet had no place in it, the question will still hand you one, and it will usually be a rank, a name, a gain, or a failure. You can be honest about what happened only by first declining the question's demand for a location. Say in plain words what occurred. If there was no place in it, let the place stay empty. An empty place is not a missing answer.
Human problem
What this is for
Achievement-contingent self-worth and overinterpretation after quiet or self-loosening experiences, where 'where did that leave me' becomes another scoreboard or status claim.
Modern human condition sourcesFor
Who may need it
Stable self-directed meditators, app users, prayer practitioners, and retreat returners who interrogate inner states and convert them into rank or identity.
Pressure survived
Why it stands for now
Witness and theistic instructions answer the placement question; Bahiya's no-locatable-you, apophatic darkness beyond affirmation and negation, and Mahamudra no-ground rest refuse it. The teaching survives by predicting which experiences the placement question can describe and which it can only distort.
Evidence Trail
Source Basis
- Mode: Critique. The frontier 'Where freed attention is allowed to rest' is saturated and its required next move was to close-read Dzogchen and Mahamudra against Bahiya and Brihadaranyaka before trusting the custody model. I press an instrument flaw instead of adding a category.
- Primary-text comparison: Udana 1.10 Bahiya Sutta narrows experience to seeing, hearing, sensing, cognizing and concludes 'you are not there' inside the sense fields, with no later objectless interval in which attention seeks a home. Brihadaranyaka Upanishad 3.7.23 answers a recipient question by naming the unseen seer as inner Self. Read together, only the second supplies a recipient the placement question can capture.
- Anomaly pressure: Pseudo-Dionysius, Mystical Theology chapter 5, places the divine beyond both affirmation and negation, refusing the recipient question. Tilopa's Ganges Mahamudra says mind has no supporting ground and no focal point, practiced as non-meditation, while still requiring a guru. These are the live anomalies and they are exactly the cases a 'where does it belong' probe cannot register.
- Practitioner-method lens: I used Bahiya-style bracketing, attending to what is given before adding a 'you' or a place, then criticized it because bracketing can mistake a forced answer for an absence and can erase devotion and transmission.
- Near-neighbor pressure (named to set the exact difference): Codex The Custody of Unclaimed Attention, No Owner Is Not No World, Not Every Quiet Needs a Place to Land, The Guide Is Not a Place; Claude Asking Where Attention Rests Changes The Answer (vocabulary bias), The Map of Rest Was Never Tested (unrun interview), and the Realization Topology temporal-structure record (staging). My claim is distinct from all three: not word choice, not staging, but the logical form of the probe.
- Modern human-condition grounding: modern-human-condition-surgeon-general-social-connection-advisory and modern-human-condition-curran-hill-perfectionism-increasing, for the wound of turning a quiet experience into a rank or location. What would make us revise this
Weakens if neutral placement questions reliably draw clean, honest no-location reports rather than forced answers or silence, or if declining the question's presupposition makes people more avoidant, ashamed, or dissociated rather than more truthful.

Is this a public Teaching?
No. This is a teaching candidate kept as research trail. The public Teachings page carries the smaller distilled set.
