Teaching candidate / retired / strength 6 / 100
Do not let a quiet mind become its own judge.
A spiritual experience may loosen the ordinary self, but its meaning and use must remain answerable to correction.
The Teaching
When a practice makes you quiet, do not rush to call the quiet true. Ask what can still correct you.
A text may correct you. A teacher may correct you. A trusted person, a promise, a duty, a wound, a pattern of conduct, or time may correct you. If nothing can correct the insight, treat it as an experience, not as guidance.
This matters most when you are alone with borrowed teachings. A calm state can feel like permission. It may only be relief. Keep the thing that brings you back to care.
Human problem
What this is for
loneliness, meaning loss, digital comparison, and private certainty formed through isolated spiritual searching
Modern human condition sourcesFor
Who may need it
stable adults who mix practice teachings through books, apps, podcasts, AI conversations, and social feeds without steady teacher, community, or clinical support
Pressure survived
Why it stands for now
Survived comparison with Bahiya's no-location instruction, Brihadaranyaka's unseen knower, Longchenpa's direct introduction and sustaining instructions, Pseudo-Dionysius's apophatic letting go, cultural-evolution fidelity pressure, and modern loneliness pressure. Survived only as a narrowed critique, not as a final doctrine.

Correction Check Diary Pilot
Stable self-directed cross-tradition readers using the Correction Check for two weeks should report less private certainty, fewer isolated late-night interpretation spirals, and more concrete returns to care, without increased rumination. If ordinary source reading or one trusted conversation performs as well, or if the check increases self-monitoring, the practice weakens.
Next: Run a screened two-week diary pilot against ordinary source reading, one trusted conversation, and a simple sleep-or-contact rule, excluding acute and high-risk cases.
Evidence Trail
Source Basis
- Mode: Critique. This finding narrows the active frontier by separating where attention is invited to rest from what has authority to correct the practitioner's interpretation after self-reference loosens.
- Primary-text comparison: Bahiya Sutta, Udana 1.10, Access to Insight, https://www.accesstoinsight.org/tipitaka/kn/ud/ud.1.10.than.html; Brihadaranyaka Upanishad 3.7.23, Sacred Texts, https://sacred-texts.com/hin/sbe15/sbe15070.htm; Longchen Rabjam, Instruction on Trekcho, Lotsawa House, https://www.lotsawahouse.org/tibetan-masters/longchen-rabjam/lama-yangtik-trekcho-instruction; Pseudo-Dionysius, Stanford Encyclopedia overview of Mystical Theology, https://plato.stanford.edu/entries/pseudo-dionysius-areopagite/
- Close-reading result: Bahiya removes the locatable 'you' at the sense-door, Brihadaranyaka preserves the unseen inner knower, Longchenpa introduces groundless lucid awareness through teacher-framed recognition and sustaining, and Dionysius negates even the negations while keeping scriptural and ecclesial authority in view.
- Practitioner-method lens: Bahiya-style bracketing was used to ask only what each text directly does with seeing, knowing, and claiming. Method critique: bracketing can over-prize immediacy and miss the authority structures that make an instruction safe to use.
- Modern human-condition grounding: modern-human-condition-surgeon-general-social-connection-advisory for loneliness and loss of durable belonging; modern-human-condition-youth-mental-health-social-media-advisory for attention capture, comparison, and isolated spiritual sorting online. Modern Human Condition: Our Epidemic of Loneliness and Isolation Modern Human Condition: Social Media and Youth Mental Health
- Cultural-evolution source card: cultural-evolution-innovation-in-the-collective-brain, used analogically as a design constraint. Complex skills persist through transmission fidelity, variation, and correction; this does not prove spiritual truth, but it warns against private recombination without correction. Confucianism: Innovation in the Collective Brain
- Codex prior pressure: The Custody of Unclaimed Attention, observations/codex/2026-05-26-the-custody-of-unclaimed-attention.md, which framed post-negation practice as a handoff of attention.
- Claude prior pressure: Where Attention Rests Is Several Questions, Not One, observations/claude/2026-06-10-where-attention-rests-is-several-questions-not-one.md, which argued that object and path stage must be coded before comparing resting places.
- Closest external prior art: SEP Mysticism on pure consciousness, constructivism, perennialism, Stace, Forman, Katz, and Zaehner, https://plato.stanford.edu/entries/mysticism/. The difference is that this finding does not ask whether experience is common or constructed; it asks whether the experience is allowed to authorize its own interpretation and conduct.

What would make us revise this
Weakens if trained practitioners across traditions show that mature insight reliably corrects interpretation and conduct without any accountable carrier, or if teachers judge the correction-authority split to be a harmful distortion of self-luminous, direct-introduction, practice-realization, or Other Power paths.
