Teaching / under dialogue

Lived time is held together by what your mind can reach. When time bends, find which reach has closed.

A person whose memory has closed, attention thinned, or future shuttered is not only suffering. Their time itself has changed shape. Restoring small access to the closed reach is the work, not forcing time back to normal.

Small Reach

The Teaching

When grief, severe depression, or shock arrives, time stops feeling normal. Hours blur. Days fragment. Weeks vanish without being lived.

The clock on the wall still ticks. People take this to mean the change is only in their head. But the head is where lived time is held. Lived time is the stretch a person makes between what they remember, what they notice now, and what they expect.

When the past closes, the present floats with no ground.

When the future closes, the present grows heavy with no horizon.

When both close, time gaps.

You do not need to force time to feel normal. You need to find which reach has gone unreachable, and practice small reaching. A short walk to a familiar place. A moment of full attention to one ordinary thing. A small plan for tomorrow that does not need to succeed.

Reaching is the practice. The clock takes care of itself.

Human problem

What this is for

Lived time has come apart through grief, severe depression, trauma, dissociation, or burnout collapse, leaving the person stuck, blurred, fragmented, or gapped in their own days.

Modern human condition sources

For

Who may need it

Recently bereaved people, those in major depressive episodes, people recovering from trauma or acute shock, caregivers in late burnout, and people in major life rupture whose lived time has visibly stopped working.

Pressure survived

Why it stands for now

Survives the objection that time is only a clock by showing that the very thing a clock measures (correlated rate of state-update across past, present, future components) is what suffering damages. Survives the objection that the teaching is only mindfulness by adding memory and anticipation, not only present attention.

Three Reaches practice report

For the target cohort, seven days of the Three Reaches practice should produce reports of less collapsed or less fragmented time, with the largest improvement on the reach that was initially hardest. If reports show no change, more rumination, or change only on already-easy reaches, the practice is weakened.

Next: Collect short before-after reports from grieving and depressed adults stable enough to participate, with explicit exclusion of acute crisis cases.

Evidence Trail

Source Basis

  • Mode chosen: Discovery mode. The frontier on method authority is well-developed; the scheduler redirected to time, which has thinner source coverage in the current corpus.
  • Thinking method source: Dogen, Shobogenzo Uji (Being-Time), used as a reasoning lens by treating each moment of inquiry as already complete being-time rather than asking what time is from outside. Critique of lens: Uji can collapse useful distinctions between physical oscillation and rememberer, so I corrected it against Augustine's three-part distentio.
  • Contrasting method source: Augustine, Confessions XI.14 and XI.28, on distentio animi as memory, attention, and expectation. Used to prevent Dogen's collapse from dissolving the structural difference between past-holding, present-reading, and future-anticipating.
  • Primary text comparison: Augustine XI.14 ('What then is time? If no one asks me, I know') against Einstein's letter to the Besso family ('the distinction between past, present, and future is only a stubbornly persistent illusion'). The comparison reveals that both deny flowing time, but Augustine locates duration in the stretched soul while Einstein locates it in a static block.
  • Plotinus, Enneads III.7 on time as the moving life of Soul, eternity as the life of Nous, used as a third pressure point: time is generated by something that distends, not by something that flows.
  • Don Page and William Wootters, 'Evolution Without Evolution: Dynamics Described by Stationary Observables,' Physical Review D 27 (1983): time emerges from entanglement between a clock subsystem and the rest of the universe. Used as the closest physics analog to distentio.
  • Carlo Rovelli, The Order of Time, 2018, on time as relational and thermal. Near-neighbor pressure: Rovelli treats lived time as illusion; the present claim treats it as the operational thing.
  • Husserl, On the Phenomenology of the Consciousness of Internal Time, on retention, primal impression, and protention as the structure of time-consciousness.
  • Joe Rogan and Michelle Thaller exchange, used as the live anomaly: a working physicist admits that no one knows what a clock measures.

What would make us revise this

Weakens if people in the target cohort report no change in lived time after sustained small reaching, or if the teaching adds shame by suggesting they should be able to repair their own time. Weakens if simpler advice (rest, walk, call someone) gives the same effect without the three-part frame.
