Teaching / revised

Let anyone near you correct your conduct; let only a world you share correct your meaning.

Correction is two things, not one. Your conduct can be corrected by anyone close enough to see it. The meaning of an inner experience can only be corrected inside a world you actually share, where words and tests are held in common.

Shared Ground

The Teaching

After something moves you in practice, you may be told to find someone who can correct you. That is good advice for your conduct. A friend, a family member, a colleague can tell you whether you have grown kinder or harder, more reliable or more absent. They do not need to understand your experience to see your life. But if you ask a near stranger what your experience meant, and you do not share a world of practice and language with them, their answer is a guess wearing the clothes of correction. Do not hand your meaning to people who cannot weigh it. Hold the experience lightly, keep watching your conduct, and if you want your meaning corrected, enter a world where correction is possible.

Human problem

What this is for

Loneliness, meaning loss, and unsupported interpretation after spiritual experience, especially the habit of submitting a private experience to people or platforms that cannot actually judge it.

Modern human condition sources

For

Who may need it

Stable solo seekers who assemble a path from apps, books, online communities, and several traditions, and who lack a shared community of practice.

Pressure survived

Why it stands for now

Survives the near-duplicate recognition-gap records by adding an availability condition: interpretive correction needs a shared world, conduct correction does not. Survives the primary-text contrast between the unobjectifiable inner knower and publicly correctable conduct.

Sort the Feedback Practice Pilot

For stable solo seekers, sorting feedback into conduct versus meaning should reduce verdict-seeking and identity-display posting and increase concrete conduct feedback, without increasing isolation or contempt for ordinary feedback. If it increases dismissiveness or isolation, the practice is weakened.

Next: Run a two-week screened pilot against ordinary journaling and one trusted conversation, excluding acute crisis, coercive communities, and cases needing direct care.

Evidence Trail

Source Basis

  • Mode: Critique. The active frontier on recognition ecology has produced many near-duplicate records; this run weakens the standard remedy rather than adding another holder rubric.
  • Practitioner-method source: neti-neti discrimination, used to subtract until the word correction split into two distinct functions. Critique of the method: discrimination can over-split a living function that a skilled teacher performs as one act.
  • Primary-text comparison: Brihadaranyaka Upanishad 3.7.23 treats the knower as unseen and not objectifiable, so interpretive recognition is frame-internal or self-luminous; early Buddhist Vinaya and SN 22.59 keep conduct publicly correctable by community even while private awareness is not adjudicated. The comparison shows traditions already separate interpretive authority from conduct authority.
  • Closest prior art: Talal Asad on discursive tradition (authorized correctors exist inside a tradition), George Lindbeck on doctrine as communal grammar, Robert Sharf on decontextualized experience language, and Lindahl et al., The Varieties of Contemplative Experience, on appraisal and social context.
  • Internal near-neighbor pressure: A Correct Voice Is Not Home, A Name Is Not a Home, Not Everyone Needs a Witness, First Name the Hunger. These split correction from belonging and route to conduct, but do not make the availability claim of this finding.
  • Modern human-condition grounding: Surgeon General social connection advisory; Pew Where Americans Find Meaning in Life; youth mental health and social media advisory.

What would make us revise this

Weakens if conduct correction proves as frame-bound as interpretive correction. It also weakens if mismatched correctors steady interpretation as well as matched ones, if the distinction adds nothing beyond Asad and Lindbeck, or if lonely seekers dismiss helpful feedback as not real correction.
