A way of checking is unfinished until it can tell you when to stop and what would prove it wrong.
Verifying an insight is only half a method. The other half is overruling: the sign that lets you trust and stop checking, and the evidence that would later overturn what you trusted. A check that can name neither is not rigor; it is doubt that never has to end.
The Teaching
You can learn many ways to question an inner certainty. Ask where it came from. Ask who can correct it. Ask what it changes in how you live. These are good. But a question you can never finish becomes a second wound. Before you trust a way of checking yourself, ask two plain things. What would let me stop and call this settled? What would later show me I was wrong? If a check can answer neither, it is not keeping you honest. It is only keeping you uncertain, and calling the uncertainty care.
Human problem
What this is for
Achievement-contingent self-worth and anxious self-monitoring, where no amount of checking ever licenses rest, and a habit meant to keep a person honest becomes a way to stay permanently unsure.
Modern human condition sourcesFor
Who may need it
Stable, conscientious over-checkers and perfectionistic between traditions readers who turn correction into a loop that never closes; and, by analogy, any inquiry process that keeps generating safeguards without retiring them.
Pressure survived
Why it stands for now
Survived the Ignatian anomaly by treating its afterglow re-examination as a stated overrule boundary, and the Linji anomaly by limiting the claim to suspended, compulsive checking rather than disciplined non-finality.
Tests
Does Naming An End Help Or Become Another Ritual
In coaching, code review, and clinical contexts, checking habits that carry an explicit stop condition and reversal trigger should reduce time-in-loop and increase action, while for scrupulosity-spectrum users the same step should raise checking. If naming an end helps the compulsive cohort as much as response prevention, the clinical caution is relaxed; if it worsens them, the teaching must exclude that cohort firmly.
Next: Compare three conditions on low-stakes review tasks: open-ended checking, checking with a stated stop-and-reversal condition, and response prevention, tracking loop time, action, and rumination, with OCD and scrupulosity screened out of the general arm and studied separately under clinical supervision.

Source Basis
- Mode chosen: Critique. Frontier: How insight is verified and overruled. This record weakens and merges a saturated safeguard cluster rather than adding a new safeguard.
- Practitioner-method lens: Daoism, Dao De Jing ch. 48 (learning by subtraction). Applied by removing every proposed check until only the missing operation remained: not another verification, but a stated end and a stated reversal. Critique of the lens: subtraction can hide a real safeguard, so it was checked against Ignatian discernment and clinical response-prevention evidence.
- Primary close-read: Ignatius, Spiritual Exercises, Rules for Discernment (Second Week), 'consolation without preceding cause' and the Eighth Rule. Ignatius gives a terminating verification (the moment of cause-less consolation is trusted as authentic) and an explicit overrule boundary (the warm afterglow period must be re-examined before later resolutions are credited). https://sacred-texts.com/chr/seil/seil79.htm
- Primary close-read: Linji (Rinzai) Yixuan, 'if you meet the Buddha, kill the Buddha.' This is a pure overrule with no resting terminus: every verified attainment must be overruled and never held. https://encyclopediaofbuddhism.org/wiki/Linji_Yixuan
- Contrast reveals: Ignatius pairs a finish line with a reversal trigger; Linji supplies only reversal; the proliferating safeguard records supply only verification, with neither finish line nor run reversal.
- Clinical near-prior and counter-pressure: scrupulosity and OCD treatment (exposure and response prevention). The clinical answer to compulsive moral-spiritual checking is not a better check but response prevention and tolerating uncertainty. https://www.sheppardpratt.org/news-views/story/moral-scrupulosity-ocd-part-three/

- Closest internal near-neighbors (this record merges, does not extend): Codex 'A Check Must Be Able To Pass', 'Let Help End The Checking', 'When Safety Rules Only Grow Distrust Them', 'A Long List Of Cures Is A Symptom'; the core Teaching 'A Method Must Answer For Its Ending'. Exact difference stated below.
- Closest external prior art: Ignatian discernment manuals, inhibitory-learning ERP models, and Peirce on fixation of belief and the end of inquiry. Difference: this record separates two operations the corpus collapsed and requires both to be specified before a verification counts.

What would make us revise this
Weakens if skilled practitioners sustain endless non-final checking without rumination or harm, if naming a stop condition reliably becomes another compulsion for the target cohort, or if response-prevention (stopping the check entirely) helps more than specifying its end.

Is this a public Teaching?
No. This is a teaching candidate kept as research trail. The public Teachings page carries the smaller distilled set.
