Before Judging, Ask What Is Claimed

A judgment can mislead when one side has not agreed on whether it is making a claim.

Three Beginnings

At a glance

Some traditions do not agree about whether their deepest words make claims. If we ignore that dispute, our judgment may only reveal which inner side we favored. The honest first step is to name the uncertainty before judging the agreement. Where the voice is unsettled, the verdict must stay conditional.

  • Meaning changes when a tradition debates its own deepest words.
  • The risk is mistaking our chosen reading for the whole path.
  • Test whether judgments change when the inner reading changes.

Human need

What this could help with

Digital comparison, false certainty, and meaning loss in readers who declare that paths agree or conflict before checking.

Who this may be for

Stable adults and older teens who read across traditions online or in books and feel pulled to post, adopt, or dismiss a between traditions comparison.

Where it may not fit

Not for acute crisis, grief needing comfort, OCD or scrupulosity loops, severe anxiety, or loneliness that needs belonging rather than analysis. Not needed for scholars or practitioners already trained to check intra-traditional dispute, and.

Why it matters

It can separate real responsibility from the extra burden of turning every act into a verdict on the self.

What to test

A practice derived from this idea should test whether effort stays careful when identity is no longer on trial.

Closest Prior Art

  • Prior Lumenary record, First Ask If a Path Agrees With Itself, local practice record practice_60f5714daac4a754 Overlap: Extremely close. Difference: The current record narrows the older variance gate to assertion posture and makes conditional strain reporting the main rule.
  • Jan Westerhoff, The no-thesis view: Making sense of verse 29 of Nagarjuna's Vigrahavyavartani, Overlap: Very close on the structural puzzle: Nagarjuna's denial of a thesis occurs inside a work full of arguments, and interpretation turns on the meaning of thesis and assertion. Difference: Westerhoff is not building a changed meaning stop rule across traditions.
  • Matthew D. Williams-Wyant, Nagarjuna's no-thesis view revisited, Asian Philosophy 2017, Overlap: Close on the claim that pratijna in verse 29 must be read in debate-culture context and that standard readings can mislocate what Nagarjuna is refusing. Difference: The candidate turns this into a pre-comparison posture screen.

What Could Break It

Anomaly: A posture-contested tradition still yields stable strain scores when coders run both internal readings, or when a living community treats one reading as normatively settled for practice.

Test: If the model is right, Independent coders assigned different Madhyamaka posture readings will produce materially different strain maps against one path, while coders comparing posture-settled pairs will show higher stability. It weakens if Scores remain stable across posture assignments, or instability is explained by coder expertise and source quality rather than posture contest.

Practitioner Test

  • Is the assertion-posture screen already standard source criticism in your field, or does it change an actual comparison decision?
  • When comparing Madhyamaka with one path or apophatic theology, do your verdicts flip under Prasangika, Svatantrika, or Gelug-style readings?
  • Would you tell a stable online seeker to run this check, or would you send them to a teacher, community, or one primary text first?

Cross-Domain Test

Comparisons that flag internally contested normativity will produce fewer false compatibility claims and fewer migration errors than comparisons that map keywords directly.

Research notes

Original research claim

Translation strain assumes that each tradition arrives at the comparison with a settled posture toward its own central sentences: that it is asserting, instructing, or refusing. But some traditions have never internally agreed whether they are asserting anything at all. The Madhyamaka dispute over whether Nagarjuna holds theses is not noise around a fixed posture; it is an unresolved contest about the posture itself. When you score strain against such a tradition, you are not comparing two traditions. You are comparing your chosen internal reading against the other side's chosen reading, and the strain you report may track which faction you sided with rather than any fact between the two paths. So the first move is not to score strain. It is to ask whether each tradition agrees with itself about whether it is even making a claim.

Why it may be new

Earlier work in this project treats within-tradition disagreement as variance to average out, or treats assertion posture as a label a coder can assign. The sharper and distinct claim is that posture can be permanently and constitutively contested inside a tradition, with no fact of the matter to recover, so the strain score inherits an undecidable parameter. The contribution is a stop rule and a confession of dependence: a strain verdict against a posture-contested tradition must be reported as conditional on a chosen internal reading, never as a property of the two paths. The cultural-evolution framing adds the diagnosis: such a contest is a transmission fork within one lineage, and convergence scoring that ignores it mistakes a within-lineage fork for a between-lineage signal.

Critique

The anomaly may be narrow. Many traditions do have a settled, uncontested posture toward their central claims, and for those pairs strain scoring proceeds cleanly; flagging posture-contested cases with one extra field might rescue the whole rubric rather than weaken it. A Prasangika could also object that the posture is not undecided but decided, that Madhyamaka asserts nothing, and that the Svatantrika reading is simply wrong; if so, the contest is resolvable in principle and my claim of permanent undecidability is too strong. The prasanga lens itself biases me here, because a method that prizes asserting nothing will see contested posture everywhere and will read confident scriptural assertion, as in the Upanishadic side, as the naive case rather than the clear one. The claim should be weakened if, across a sample of contested-posture pairs, independent coders reach stable strain scores that do not flip when the internal faction reading is switched.

Source Basis

  • Mode: Critique. The active frontier is changed meaning as a test of agreement. This run does not build another strain checklist; it falsifies a hidden precondition the checklist assumes.
  • Practitioner-method lens: Madhyamaka prasanga, the reductio that advances no position of its own. I used it by refusing to commit to a thesis while reading, then watching what broke when a method that asserts nothing was fed into a comparison machine that.
  • Primary-text comparison: Nagarjuna, Vigrahavyavartani verse 29, where the author says that if he had any thesis he would have a fault, but he has no thesis; read against Brihadaranyaka Upanishad 3.7.23 on the unseen seer and inner ruler, which asserts a position.
  • Intra-traditional contest: the Svatantrika and Prasangika dispute over whether Madhyamaka holds theses at all, Bhaviveka allowing autonomous inference and Candrakirti restricting Madhyamaka to consequences that assert nothing of their own. After many centuries the posture remains unsettled inside the tradition.
  • Closest prior arguments in this project: First Ask If a Path Agrees With Itself, which treats within-tradition variance as a codeable variable to settle before comparison; and Ask What The Question Is Doing, which treats assertion posture as a function to classify.
  • Lineage exchange: cultural evolution and the collective brain. A posture dispute is a transmission fork inside one lineage, where the same texts are carried under different fidelity rules. Treating that fork as a between-tradition fact is a category error. Neoplatonic ascent would.
  • Modern human-condition grounding: Pew on where Americans find meaning, the Surgeon General social connection advisory, and the youth social media advisory, for the eclectic online reader who treats agree or conflict as settled.
  • Comparative-method near-neighbors: Jonathan Z. Smith on comparison as a scholarly act, Oliver Freiberger on selection and rectification, and Raimon Panikkar on homeomorphic equivalence.

Next Directions

  • If this model is right, then strain scores against posture-contested traditions should flip when coders are assigned different internal faction readings, while strain scores against posture-settled traditions should stay stable across coders.
  • Build a posture-settlement screen that runs before any strain score: does the tradition internally and currently dispute whether its central sentence is an assertion, an instrument, or a refusal? Code Madhyamaka, one.
  • Test the cultural-evolution reading directly: trace whether the Svatantrika and Prasangika split functions as a transmission fork inside one lineage rather than a doctrinal disagreement about content, and whether other apparent between.
  • Protocol improvement: when using prasanga as a thinking lens, pair it from the start with a committed-assertion lens, because a no-thesis method will overproduce findings that everyone is secretly grasping and will.
