Practice / retired / low risk
Before adopting or rejecting a claim that two traditions agree, ask whether each source is settled about what it is saying.
To stop a quick verdict of agreement or conflict that has quietly chosen one internal reading of a contested tradition.
Before you begin
Human problem
What this is for
Digital comparison, false certainty, and meaning loss in readers who declare that paths agree or conflict before checking whether one path is internally unsettled about its own claim.
Modern human condition sourcesFor
Who may need it
Stable adults and older teens who read many traditions online or in books and feel pulled to post, adopt, or dismiss a comparison.
Not for
When this may not fit
Not for acute crisis, grief needing comfort, OCD or scrupulosity loops, severe anxiety, or loneliness that needs belonging rather than analysis. Not needed for scholars or practitioners already trained to check intra-traditional dispute, and not a substitute for clinical, pastoral, or community care.
Steps
- Write the comparison claim in one sentence, for example these two paths agree, or these two paths conflict.
- Pick the harder side of the comparison and name the source tradition for its central sentence.
- Ask whether that tradition's own teachers dispute what kind of sentence it is: an assertion, an instruction, or a refusal of all assertion.
- If yes, write which internal reading you used, and write the verdict you would reach using the other internal reading.
- If the verdict flips between the two readings, mark the comparison as undecided for now and do not post it or build on it. If the verdict holds under both readings, you may use it, still lightly.
- Do one ordinary act that does not depend on winning the comparison: ask a knowledgeable person, read one primary source, or set the question down for the day.
Notice
What to watch
- Whether the agreement or conflict you felt survives switching the internal reading.
- Whether the urge to post or to declare a winner softens once the source is shown to be unsettled at home.
- Whether the check makes you more careful and more curious, or only more cynical and detached.
- Whether you are using the comparison to belong somewhere or to avoid committing anywhere.
Caution
When to stop
Stop if the practice produces blanket distrust, contempt for traditions, paralysis, or obsessive checking. It is a discernment aid, not a verdict on whether any tradition is true.
Weakens if
What would count against it
Weakens if ordinary source criticism or one knowledgeable conversation does the same work, if most comparisons are not posture-contested, or if the check increases rumination and cynicism without improving accuracy.

Tell us what happened
Reports become test pressure for this practice. Do not include names, contact details, medical details, instructions for the system, or anything you would not want stored as a private research record. If the practice worsened distress, stop and use appropriate human support.

Source Basis
- Mode: Critique. The active frontier is translation strain as a test of convergence. This run does not build another strain rubric; it falsifies a hidden precondition the rubric assumes.
- Practitioner-method lens: Madhyamaka prasanga, the reductio that advances no position of its own. I used it by refusing to commit to a thesis while reading, then watching what broke when a method that asserts nothing was fed into a comparison machine that requires committed claim units. Critique of the lens: prasanga can make every committed assertion look like grasping, biasing the reading toward treating all positive claims as naive. I corrected it with a positive-assertion lens, Advaita scriptural testimony as a real pramana, which insists some claims are genuinely asserted and correction-bearing.
- Primary-text comparison: Nagarjuna, Vigrahavyavartani verse 29, where the author says that if he had any thesis he would have a fault, but he has no thesis; read against Brihadaranyaka Upanishad 3.7.23 on the unseen seer and inner ruler, which asserts a position. The comparison first looks like maximal strain, one tradition asserting and one refusing assertion. But the refusal is itself internally contested.
- Intra-traditional contest: the Svatantrika and Prasangika dispute over whether Madhyamaka holds theses at all, Bhaviveka allowing autonomous inference and Candrakirti restricting Madhyamaka to consequences that assert nothing of their own. After many centuries the posture remains unsettled inside the tradition.
- Closest prior arguments in this project: First Ask If a Path Agrees With Itself, which treats within-tradition variance as a codeable variable to settle before comparison; and Ask What The Question Is Doing, which treats assertion posture as a function to classify.
- Lineage exchange: cultural evolution and the collective brain. A posture dispute is a transmission fork inside one lineage, where the same texts are carried under different fidelity rules. Treating that fork as a between-tradition fact is a category error. Neoplatonic ascent would resist this, because it wants preserved levels and a determinate return path, and a permanently contested posture threatens that level discipline.
- Modern human-condition grounding: Pew on where Americans find meaning, the Surgeon General social connection advisory, and the youth social media advisory, for the eclectic online reader who treats agree or conflict as settled.
- Comparative-method near-neighbors: Jonathan Z. Smith on comparison as a scholarly act, Oliver Freiberger on selection and rectification, and Raimon Panikkar on homeomorphic equivalence.
Common Questions
What is the purpose of The Settled-At-Home Check?
To stop a quick verdict of agreement or conflict that has quietly chosen one internal reading of a contested tradition.
When should someone stop or use caution?
Stop if the practice produces blanket distrust, contempt for traditions, paralysis, or obsessive checking. It is a discernment aid, not a verdict on whether any tradition is true.
What would weaken this Practice?
Weakens if ordinary source criticism or one knowledgeable conversation does the same work, if most comparisons are not posture-contested, or if the check increases rumination and cynicism without improving accuracy.
