Human problem

What this is for

Achievement-contingent self-worth, anxious self-monitoring, digital comparison, and burnout after reflective practice.

Modern human condition sources

For

Who may need it

Stable reflective adults who tend to convert meditation, surrender, inquiry, or self-improvement into proof of worth.

Not for

When this may not fit

Not for acute crisis, suicidal thoughts, psychosis, mania, severe depression, dissociation, addiction withdrawal, OCD or scrupulosity loops, fresh trauma activation, unsafe authority, or people avoiding concrete responsibility.

Steps

  1. Write the practice instruction you just used in plain words.
  2. Ask: did this instruction give me an after-state to inspect, or a next act to return to?
  3. If it gave an after-state, name one observable sign the tradition itself would accept, not a private verdict on your worth.
  4. If it gave a next act, do one small act now: contact a safe person, return to a duty, rest, read the assigned text, follow the form, or stop the search for ten minutes.
  5. End with one line about what changed in conduct, not what you are worth.

Notice

What to watch

  • Whether the check lowers or increases rumination.
  • Whether you return to ordinary care faster.
  • Whether the practice becomes another self-grading ritual.
  • Whether you avoid a duty that actually needs attention.

Caution

When to stop

Stop if it increases checking, shame, unreality, panic, isolation, compulsive reassurance, or avoidance of needed care.

Weakens if

What would count against it

The practice performs no better than rest, one trusted conversation, ordinary journaling, or simple planning, or if it increases self-monitoring.

  • Mode: Critique. Active frontier: remainder pressure after self-negation, with anomaly pressure from Dogen practice-realization, Huangbo no-seeking, Dzogchen direct recognition, and radical Other Power.
  • Primary close-read comparison: SN 22.59 permits disciplined aggregate inquiry and release knowledge, while the Heart Sutra negates attainment and Dogen Uji resists a simple firewood-to-ash transition. Brihadaranyaka Upanishad 3.7.23 names an unseen knower. The comparison shows that self-loosening texts do not grant the same kind of after-state. I used it to ask whether the research question itself adds needless self-management. Critique of the method: non-forcing can hide needed investigation, so it was checked against SN 22.59's disciplined inquiry and modern safety triage.
