Practice / revised / low risk
List three things holding your life that you did not build, and let yourself lean on one.
To relocate some of a person's steadiness outside their own performance before a collapse, so that losing the grip does not mean losing everything.
Before you begin
Human problem
What this is for
Burnout, achievement-contingent self-worth, and the fragility of a life held together only by control and usefulness.
Modern human condition sourcesFor
Who may need it
Stable adults whose worth and steadiness ride on performance, control, or being needed, and who sense they are carrying everything by themselves.
Not for
When this may not fit
Not for acute crisis where little or nothing is actually holding the person; naming an empty floor can deepen despair, and human or clinical care must come first. Not for people whose wound is denied agency, coercion, or spiritual abuse; they need agency restored, not more surrender language. Not for psychosis, mania, active withdrawal, or severe depression without support.
Steps
- Write one sentence naming what you are trying to hold together right now by your own effort.
- List three things carrying your life that you did not author today: a body that breathes, a person who shows up, a routine that runs without you, a duty or promise made earlier, a place that steadies you.
- Choose one of the three and write how you could lean on it a little more this week, in a concrete way.
- Do one small act that leans: ask someone for help, keep a routine without optimizing it, let a duty hold you, rest without earning it.
- Stop. Do not turn the list into a new performance to perfect.
Notice
What to watch
- Whether naming unauthored support loosens the grip or makes you anxious that the support is not enough.
- Whether leaning a little leads to relief and contact, or to guilt and a fear of being a burden.
- Whether your steadiness starts to feel less like something you must produce each day.
Caution
When to stop
Stop if the practice increases despair because little is actually holding you, if it slides into passivity or dependency, or if it becomes another self-rating exercise. It is not a substitute for rest, therapy, medical care, recovery support, or repairing real relationships.
Weakens if
What would count against it
Users report more helplessness, more guilt about leaning, no change in steadiness, or that ordinary rest and asking for help worked just as well.

Source Basis
- Run mode: Critique. The active frontier (remainder pressure and continuity ecology after self-negation) is treated as an overbuilt cluster that needs narrowing and falsification, not another rubric variant.
- Thinking-method source: Advaita neti-neti, used as a lens by stripping away the identification 'I am the one holding my life together' and watching what holding remained. Critique of the method: neti-neti tends to leave a witness-Self as the surviving holder, which smuggles a self-held residue back in. Corrected with early Buddhist not-self in SN 22.59, which refuses to authorize any owner of the remaining process.
- Primary-text comparison: Shinran, Tannisho (Other Power, bombu as the foolish being incapable of self-power; holding relocated entirely to Amida's vow) read against SN 45.8 Magga-vibhanga (right effort: holding sustained by the practitioner's desire, persistence, and intent). The comparison shows that where holding is located is a real difference. Dogen, Bendowa (practice-realization identity) is the anomaly: there is no gap across which holding must be carried, so the continuity-ecology question loses its referent.
- Near-duplicate cluster inside the corpus: Continuity Ecology Under Negation; Distributed Continuity Architecture; Continuity Location Under Transformative Practice; The Continuity Ecology of Self-Dissolution; Operational Remainder Ecology; Custody and Receiving Surface. All propose the same coding rubric (dissolution target, residue policy, support holder, receiving surface, failure mode), all carry the same self-critique (too elastic, circular, needs blind split-source coding), and none report an executed coding study.
- External prior art: Jack Engler, 'you have to be somebody before you can be nobody'; Clark and Chalmers, extended mind, on cognition and selfhood constituted by external supports; Pargament, deferring and collaborative religious coping styles; attachment theory's secure base; Alcoholics Anonymous surrender to a power greater than oneself.

Common Questions
What is the purpose of Name What Carries You?
To relocate some of a person's steadiness outside their own performance before a collapse, so that losing the grip does not mean losing everything.
When should someone stop or use caution?
Stop if the practice increases despair because little is actually holding you, if it slides into passivity or dependency, or if it becomes another self-rating exercise. It is not a substitute for rest, therapy, medical care, recovery support, or repairing real relationships.
What would weaken this Practice?
Users report more helplessness, more guilt about leaning, no change in steadiness, or that ordinary rest and asking for help worked just as well.
