When your grip fails, look for what was holding you before you gripped.
No one is held up only by their own effort. When self-command fails, the first move is not to rebuild control but to notice the support you did not author, and to let some of your steadiness live there on purpose.
The Teaching
You think you are holding your life together. Some of it, yes. But a body keeps breathing without your command. People keep showing up whether or not you earn it today. Habits carry you on the mornings you have nothing left. A promise you made before the hard week is still standing.
When the grip fails, do not reach first for a tighter grip. Look down and see what is already under you. Name it. Let yourself rest part of your weight there.
A life held only by your own performance has nowhere to fall when the performance stops. A life that already leans, a little, on people, body, work it loves, and ordinary duty, can lose its grip and still be carried.
Human problem
What this is for
Achievement-contingent self-worth and burnout collapse, and the total despair that arrives when performance can no longer hold a life together.
Modern human condition sourcesFor
Who may need it
People whose steadiness and worth have depended almost entirely on their own performance, control, or usefulness: perfectionists, founders, high achievers, and caregivers who carry everything alone.
Pressure survived
Why it stands for now
Survived the primary-text contrast between Shinran's Other Power and the effort path's right effort, and was narrowed by the Dogen no-gap anomaly. Survived the recognition that the broad form is already widely stated, by retreating to one cohort-level claim with a falsifiable collapse prediction.

Self-Held Collapse Severity Trial
Among stable adults high in achievement-contingent self-worth, those who run Name What Carries You for two weeks should report steadier footing in a hard week and less total destabilization than a matched group using ordinary planning, with no rise in helplessness or guilt. If the practice produces dependency, guilt, or no difference from rest and asking for help, it is weakened.
Next: Recruit a small screened cohort, exclude acute crisis and coerced-agency cases, and compare against an ordinary rest-and-ask-for-help prompt.

Source Basis
- Run mode: Critique. The active frontier (remainder pressure and continuity ecology after self-negation) is treated as an overbuilt cluster that needs narrowing and falsification, not another rubric variant.
- Thinking-method source: Advaita neti-neti, used as a lens by stripping away the identification 'I am the one holding my life together' and watching what holding remained. Critique of the method: neti-neti tends to leave a witness-Self as the surviving holder, which smuggles a self-held residue back in. Corrected with early Buddhist not-self in SN 22.59, which refuses to authorize any owner of the remaining process.
- Primary-text comparison: Shinran, Tannisho (Other Power, bombu as the foolish being incapable of self-power; holding relocated entirely to Amida's vow) read against SN 45.8 Magga-vibhanga (right effort: holding sustained by the practitioner's desire, persistence, and intent). The comparison shows that where holding is located is a real difference. Dogen, Bendowa (practice-realization identity) is the anomaly: there is no gap across which holding must be carried, so the continuity-ecology question loses its referent.
- Near-duplicate cluster inside the corpus: Continuity Ecology Under Negation; Distributed Continuity Architecture; Continuity Location Under Transformative Practice; The Continuity Ecology of Self-Dissolution; Operational Remainder Ecology; Custody and Receiving Surface. All propose the same coding rubric (dissolution target, residue policy, support holder, receiving surface, failure mode), all carry the same self-critique (too elastic, circular, needs blind split-source coding), and none report an executed coding study.
- External prior art: Jack Engler, 'you have to be somebody before you can be nobody'; Clark and Chalmers, extended mind, on cognition and selfhood constituted by external supports; Pargament, deferring and collaborative religious coping styles; attachment theory's secure base; Alcoholics Anonymous surrender to a power greater than oneself.

What would make us revise this
Weakens if where continuity sat before a collapse does not predict how total the collapse is, if leaning on unauthored support produces passivity or dependency rather than steadiness, if the cohort's wound is actually denied agency rather than over-control, or if the teaching is no better than ordinary rest and human support.
