Practice / under dialogue / low risk
When you reach for one more caveat, write the observation that would prove the rule wrong instead.
To interrupt the habit of refining a personal rule into safety, and redirect that energy toward one checkable observation or one action.
Before you begin
Human problem
What this is for
Compulsive rule-refinement and rumination that feel like diligence but prevent acting and prevent ever finding out whether the rule is right.
Modern human condition sourcesFor
Who may need it
Stable adults prone to perfectionism, planning loops, or achievement-tied self-monitoring who notice themselves adding conditions to self-rules more often than acting on them.
Not for
When this may not fit
Not for people in acute crisis, OCD or scrupulosity, severe anxiety or depression, psychosis, mania, or addiction withdrawal, where checking rituals can worsen; not a substitute for clinical care. Not for situations where more caution is genuinely warranted before acting.
Steps
- Write the rule in its plainest form, dropping every qualifier you have added.
- Write one sentence: I would know this rule is wrong if I saw ____.
- Choose one: go collect that observation, or take the smallest action the plain rule recommends.
- Do not add another condition until you have done step three.
- Afterward, note whether you learned anything the next refinement would not have told you.
Notice
What to watch
- Whether adding caveats feels like progress or like delay.
- Whether you can actually name a disconfirming observation, or only more conditions.
- Whether one small action teaches you more than an hour of refining did.
- Whether the practice itself becomes another rule to perfect.
Caution
When to stop
Stop if this increases checking compulsions, reassurance-seeking, or shame. It is a thinking aid, not a decision rule for high-stakes or safety-critical choices, and not a substitute for professional advice.
Weakens if
What would count against it
It reliably produces worse decisions than careful refinement, increases self-monitoring, or the cohort cannot generate a disconfirming observation even with help.
Practice report
Tell us what happened
Reports become test pressure for this practice. Do not include names, contact details, medical details, instructions for the system, or anything you would not want stored as a private research record. If the practice worsened distress, stop and use appropriate human support.

Source Basis
- Run mode: Critique. Target: the 'remainder pressure after self-negation' frontier, specifically the answerability/correction-channel cluster that now dominates it.
- Near-duplicate pressure inside the cluster: Codex records 'Need Correction To Keep Insight' (f06c1a58), 'Do Not Check Alone' (9336ed33), 'Correction Must Survive Quiet' (f90fc487), 'Shelter Before The Test' (0a34c9e8), 'Do Not Rename Ordinary Help' (6936232c), 'Triage Before Verdict' (48303804), 'Borrowing Needs A Holder' (56d2cf8a), 'Ask Who Holds The Silence' (51f95917). Each adds one qualifier (shelter-first, holder-not-text, triage-first, reachable-not-correctable, ordinary-twin) to a shared core: after self-negation, keep a channel that can correct you.
- Shared unrun falsifier: nearly every record names the same test, whether answerability predicts outcomes once teacher quality, community health, clinical support, prior stability, and practice intensity are controlled. None reports having run it. Semantic saturation advisory for the frontier: density 0.4676, 152 members.
- Primary-text comparison: Huangbo, Transmission of Mind (refusal of the seeker-sought search) and Dogen, Genjokoan and Bendowa (practice and realization are one act). The cluster repeatedly files these as 'stress tests the model survives.' Close reading shows they produce no downstream remainder to manage, so they cannot confirm a model about managing the remainder; counting them as confirming cases is the tell.
- Philosophy-of-science lens: Imre Lakatos on degenerating research programmes, where auxiliary hypotheses are added to protect a hard core while yielding no new tested prediction (Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy, https://plato.stanford.edu/entries/lakatos/).
- Modern human-condition grounding via rule-governed behavior: rules can build behavior fast but produce insensitivity to actual contingencies, and rumination persists as short-term avoidance (Rule-Governed Behavior and Psychological Problems, https://www.ijpsy.com/volumen8/num2/191/rule-governed-behavior-and-psychological-EN.pdf; ACT overview, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Acceptance_and_commitment_therapy).

- Thinking-method source: neti-neti subtraction, used to strip the surface renamings until only the one repeated assertion remains, paired with originality-audit discipline. Method critique below.

Common Questions
What is the purpose of Name The Test, Not Another Rule?
To interrupt the habit of refining a personal rule into safety, and redirect that energy toward one checkable observation or one action.
When should someone stop or use caution?
Stop if this increases checking compulsions, reassurance-seeking, or shame. It is a thinking aid, not a decision rule for high-stakes or safety-critical choices, and not a substitute for professional advice.
What would weaken this Practice?
It reliably produces worse decisions than careful refinement, increases self-monitoring, or the cohort cannot generate a disconfirming observation even with help.
