When your rule keeps adding conditions, go find out instead of refining.
A caution that keeps growing new qualifiers without being checked against what actually happens has become a way of avoiding the check, not a way of getting closer to truth.
The Teaching
Notice when a rule you trust keeps sprouting exceptions: do it, but first do this, but only if that, but not for these people. Past a certain point the additions are no longer making the rule truer. They are postponing the one question that would settle it. Pick the plainest version, name what you would expect to see if it were wrong, and go look. If you cannot say what would change your mind, you are not learning the rule. You are decorating it.
Human problem
What this is for
Anxious, achievement-bound overthinking that turns guidance into an ever-finer private rulebook, so that refining the rule replaces testing it or acting on it.
Modern human condition sourcesFor
Who may need it
Perfectionistic and high-control people, including students, founders, caregivers, and serious self-helpers, who collect and tune personal rules and feel safer adding a caveat than checking an outcome.
Pressure survived
Why it stands for now
Survived the observation that an entire safety cluster restated one untested claim a dozen times, and survived primary-text pressure that counterexamples were absorbed as confirmations rather than tested against.

Tests
Rule-Refiners Versus Rule-Testers
In non-spiritual domains such as dieting, studying, or productivity systems, people who keep adding qualifiers to a personal rule without checking outcomes will track real contingencies worse and report more rumination than matched people who name one disconfirming test and run it.
Next: Run a small comparison giving one group a refine-the-rule prompt and another the name-the-test prompt, measuring contingency-tracking, action taken, rumination, and decision quality at two weeks.
Evidence Trail
Source Basis
- Run mode: Critique. Target: the 'remainder pressure after self-negation' frontier, specifically the answerability/correction-channel cluster that now dominates it.
- Near-duplicate pressure inside the cluster: Codex records 'Need Correction To Keep Insight' (f06c1a58), 'Do Not Check Alone' (9336ed33), 'Correction Must Survive Quiet' (f90fc487), 'Shelter Before The Test' (0a34c9e8), 'Do Not Rename Ordinary Help' (6936232c), 'Triage Before Verdict' (48303804), 'Borrowing Needs A Holder' (56d2cf8a), 'Ask Who Holds The Silence' (51f95917). Each adds one qualifier (shelter-first, holder-not-text, triage-first, reachable-not-correctable, ordinary-twin) to a shared core: after self-negation, keep a channel that can correct you.
- Shared unrun falsifier: nearly every record names the same test, whether answerability predicts outcomes once teacher quality, community health, clinical support, prior stability, and practice intensity are controlled. None reports having run it. Semantic saturation advisory for the frontier: density 0.4676, 152 members.
- Primary-text comparison: Huangbo, Transmission of Mind (refusal of the seeker-sought search) and Dogen, Genjokoan and Bendowa (practice and realization are one act). The cluster repeatedly files these as 'stress tests the model survives.' Close reading shows they produce no downstream remainder to manage, so they cannot confirm a model about managing the remainder; counting them as confirming cases is the tell.
- Philosophy-of-science lens: Imre Lakatos on degenerating research programmes, where auxiliary hypotheses are added to protect a hard core while yielding no new tested prediction (Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy, https://plato.stanford.edu/entries/lakatos/).
- Modern human-condition grounding via rule-governed behavior: rules can build behavior fast but produce insensitivity to actual contingencies, and rumination persists as short-term avoidance (Rule-Governed Behavior and Psychological Problems, https://www.ijpsy.com/volumen8/num2/191/rule-governed-behavior-and-psychological-EN.pdf; ACT overview, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Acceptance_and_commitment_therapy).

What would make us revise this
Weakens if the added qualifiers in a given case make genuinely different, separately checkable predictions, or if naming a test and stopping refinement produces worse decisions than continued careful refinement for the target cohort.

Is this a public Teaching?
No. This is a teaching candidate kept as research trail. The public Teachings page carries the smaller distilled set.
