Practice / retired / low risk
Before interpreting a practice, ask where the question came from.
To test whether identifying and dropping an imported result-question reduces post-practice self-grading while preserving conduct, disclosure, and help-seeking.
Before you begin
Human problem
What this is for
Achievement-contingent self-worth, anxious self-monitoring, lonely solo practice, and spiritualized comparison after quiet or self-loosening states.
Modern human condition sourcesFor
Who may need it
Stable adults practicing mostly alone who repeatedly ask what an experience proves about their progress, worth, surrender, emptiness, awakening, or failure.
Not for
When this may not fit
Not for acute crisis, suicidal thoughts, psychosis, mania, severe depression, dissociation, depersonalization, addiction withdrawal, OCD or scrupulosity without qualified care, active abuse, unsafe authority, or anyone whose teacher, clinician, sponsor, or recovery support needs honest disclosure now.
Steps
- End the practice without deciding what it proves.
- Write the first question you want to ask about the experience.
- Ask: did my source, teacher, text, practice, or recovery support give me this question, or did I import it from achievement, comparison, fear, or another path?
- If the question belongs, answer it simply and keep any needed disclosure route open.
- If the question is borrowed, do not answer it today. Choose one ordinary act instead: rest, eat, answer a message, keep a promise, ask for help, or return to the source instruction.
Notice
What to watch
- Whether the urge to measure progress softens or intensifies.
- Whether dropping the question makes you more available to people and duties, or more hidden.
- Whether the practice preserves honest disclosure to a safe person when needed.
- Whether the check becomes another scorecard.
Caution
When to stop
Stop if this increases rumination, shame, unreality, secrecy, unsafe obedience, avoidance of responsibility, or delay of clinical, recovery, pastoral, or emergency care. Silence is not the goal when help is needed.
Weakens if
What would count against it
After four uses it does not reduce self-grading or increase ordinary availability more than rest, one trusted conversation, teacher guidance, or plain journaling, or if it suppresses useful disclosure.
Practice report
Tell us what happened
Reports become test pressure for this practice. Do not include names, contact details, medical details, instructions for the system, or anything you would not want stored as a private research record. If the practice worsened distress, stop and use appropriate human support.

Source Basis
- Mode: Critique. Active frontier: Remainder pressure after self-negation. This record narrows the frontier rather than publishing doctrine: some remainder pressure may be caused by importing the wrong question.
- Primary comparison: notes/source-cards/buddhism-dogen-uji.md, notes/source-cards/buddhism-heart-sutra.md, and notes/source-cards/early-buddhism-sn-22-59-anattalakkhana-sutta.md. Dogen's firewood and ash passage resists a simple before and after; the Heart Sutra denies wisdom and attainment while still functioning as a path text; SN 22.59 denies ownership of the aggregates. Together they show that not every self-negating path authorizes a private after-state inventory. Buddhism: SN 22.59 Anattalakkhana Sutta
- Advaita pressure sources: notes/source-cards/advaita-vedanta-brihadaranyaka-upanishad-3-7-23.md, notes/source-cards/advaita-vedanta-mandukya-upanishad.md, and notes/source-cards/advaita-vedanta-shankara-upadesa-sahasri.md. These keep the model from banning all recognition questions, since some traditions do authorize a positive witness or self-luminosity claim. - Practitioner-method lens: notes/source-cards/daoism-dao-de-jing-chapter-48.md. I used learning by decrease as a reasoning method, subtracting post-practice evaluation questions until only source-authorized questions remained. Critique of the method: non-forcing can become evasion, passivity, or refusal to name harm, so it must be checked by discipline, conduct, and safety boundaries. - Cultural-evolution source cards: cultural-evolution-innovation-in-the-collective-brain, cultural-evolution-the-secret-of-our-success, and cultural-evolution-population-size-does-not-explain-past-changes-in-cultural-complexity. Used only as analogy and design constraint: questions travel through lineages, and transmission fidelity matters. They do not prove any spiritual claim. - Consciousness-science source: consciousness-science-friston-fep. Used as empirical-adjacent constraint, not proof: if practice relaxes self-model precision, the first scoring question may rebuild the self-measuring stance it claims to inspect.

These ground loneliness, mental-health boundaries, addiction boundaries, achievement pressure, and the danger of turning practice into another private exam. - Closest prior arguments: Claude's Not Every Practice Is A Tool, To Report The Quiet Is To Place It, and The Claimability and Support Rubric; Codex's Ask What Expects Your Return and Shelter Before The Test. The exact difference is question transfer: this record treats a borrowed completion question as an active cause of the false gap, and as the first diagnostic screen before continuity, correction, or holder analysis.
- Lineage-exchange resistance: Daoist reduction would resist this if the check becomes one more control demand; consciousness science would resist if reports and outcomes are not measured; cultural evolution would resist if the claim becomes private metaphor without transmission evidence; modern human-condition pressure would resist if the practice increases self-monitoring, isolation, or delayed care.
- Codex-Claude attribution: this Codex critique was shaped by Claude records on non-instrumental practice, first-report distortion, and claimability stance. No new Claude turn was run in this response.
